FCP video and audio out of sync

Why would you edit an m2v file. Can’t you extract a real format from that camera?

The Everio had proven very difficult to use with the Mac and FCP. I was finally able to get an mpg off the camera but I hadn’t been able to find an editable format until I found a software that would demux the mpg into an m2v and an aiff. Do you have a better suggestion? I’d sure be willing to try anything.

Is there a specific reason why I shouldn’t edit the m2v? It appears to give me a video and audio file that are initially linked and sync’d. During the edit process the video seems to become unsync’d and need about a 4 frame nudge periodically.

Will,

M2V is a long GOP format. This means that the video is represented in I and P frames. each frame is not assigned one timecode frame. What happens is and I frame gets drawn and then several P frames are drawn to “look” like the I frame.

In DV, for example, this does not exist. There is one frame represented for each timecode number.

I’m not familiar with the term “GOP” so I’m a little lost.

What file format would be ideal for editing purposes?

It appears with this 3rd party software I have I can convert the mpg from the camera with the options of;

demux to m2v and aiff
demux to m2v and m1A
demux to m2v and AC3

I can convert to
MPEG with MP2 Audio
Headed MPEG

It will also demux to ‘headed’ versions of the options above.

Any other thoughts?

The software is called MPEG Streamclip.

The first one is demux to m2v and aiff, that’s what I’ve been using but you suggested the m2v option wasn’t good.

I’m confused more now.

Sorry, my fault. You don’t only want to demux; you also want to convert the file.

Use the QuickTime export function. Set the codec to Apple DV either PAL or NTSC depending in what you’re working in and the frame rate to 25 or 29.97 depending on whether you’re using PAL or NTSC.

Convert to a Panasonic DVCPRO codec for best most consistent results.

I’ll stay out of this, but I think the camera’s shooting in SD. Do you mean upconvert it to DVCPRO50? Maybe. Not sure what the gain would be.

Hello . In my FCP Audio and Video are zinc in my editing room . But when i transfer the video and audio for Dub in dubbing room. there is zinc problem (video length is short and audio length is normal).Any one knows the problem please help me.
