FCP upgrade

No, it does not say Academic when we open it or do a “get info” on our FCP 5.1.4. We haven’t purchased the upgrade yet ’cause we’re still a little nervous about blowing the $300 and then not having the upgrade work out, but when we do bite the bullet we’ll let you know how it goes.

I do have a question for this general thread regarding upgrade protocol. We’ve read other threads on other forums about uninstalling the older FCP version before doing the upgrade. In our case we will be starting with a brand new computer. Is there any reason we’d have to install our old FCP 5.1.4 on the new computer first, or can we just install the new FCP7? In other words, are we “updating” from the old program, or does the upgrade simply ask for the old serial number and then proceed like a fresh install? I’ve never done an upgrade before that involved switching over to a new computer. Am I making my question clear?

New computer is a Mac Pro 8 core Xeon 2.66 Ghz with 8 gigs RAM.

What I know is that once you enter the upgrade disks it will prompt you for the serial number of the 5.1 and then you’ll be able to install the it.
Yo can also transfer all your apps to the new mac from the old one via firewire that way you will have all your stuff on the new one.

Hey Robin,
I know this post is quite old but I was wondering how you went with the upgrade. We’re in the exact same situation. I can’t even run my copy of 5.1.4 on snow leopard. We bought it originally as academic then did the crossgrade. It doesn’t make mention of academic anywhere on the disks. Anyways it’d be great to know how it turned out for you. Where you able to upgrade?

Wow Nick, you really dug back into the way back machine for this one. Yes, everything did work out. As Paolo said, we were prompted for the old 5.1 serial number during the install procedure for the upgrade (on a completely different computer). All’s well.

Yes unfortunately my cross grade still says ACADEMIC so I’m stuck with it.

Thanks for those replies. We got premiere thinking that we could easily transfer (as shown on adobe’s website) our FCP projects to premiere. Unfortunately that is definitely not the case unless you edit everything in uncompressed HD. Looks like we’ll be sticking with FCP for a while. Glad to hear though we can get the upgrade. Thanks again.
