FCP upgrade
Posted by Paolo Mugnaini on July 28, 2009 at 8:56 pmHi,
I have FCP 5.1.4 Academic and now I would like to upgrade to the new 7 but with the full license.
I called Apple and I got mixed answers. One time they told me that all I had to do was to purchase the upgrade for $299 and it would install FCS 3 With the full license. Then I called again and they said that Academic versions are not upgradable, however I did upgrade before from FCP 5.0 to 5.1.
Does anyone know how it really works? Thanks
P

July 28, 2009 at 9:01 pmAcademic versions are not upgradeable. That’s part of the deal when you purchase a lower cost software for learning purposes only.
If you want FCP 7, you need to purchase the full version.

July 28, 2009 at 9:02 pmYou have to purchase a full retail version. Read the license that you agreed to when you installed the software. It expressly says the software cannot be upgraded.
All the best,

Yes, FCP 7 is Intel Only. We’ve been reporting this on this forum since the day it came out.

“Good Plan. This is what I just ordered along with our four copies of the new Studio:
Apple MacPro in the following configuration:
Two 2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
16GB RAM (8x2GB)
640GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB GDDR5
AirPort Extreme Wi-Fi card with 802.11n
Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter
AppleCare Protection PlanThe Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter is required as we have two standard DVI monitors in the rooms and the new graphics cards on these Macs have a regular and a Mini DVI port on them. So we needed the adapter to connect the two monitors. Another useless adapter because Apple decided to drop the dual DVI ports on their cards since their new monitors run on the mini DVI ports.

thanks for the info re the set up. How do you like the ATI CARD? How is it working with AE, of you are using it, and in general with large size files such as RED etc? Thanks!

August 6, 2009 at 12:19 amMy question goes back to Paolo’s original post. I too had FCP5 Academic, but did that onetime $99 upgrade to Studio that was offered several years ago. My new serial number stickers say “Final Cut Studio 5.1 Retail” above the serial number and support id, so this “Retail” terminology is what makes me wonder if this fluke will allow me to do the upgrade to FCP7. Does anyone know, or know how to find out? (no worries about the computer, just got a spanking new 8 core xeon)
thanks,

August 6, 2009 at 1:07 amI just answered my own question. Just off the phone with Apple Pro Applications Support, who listened to the last 3 letters/numbers of my serial number, and confirmed that the “crossgrade” from FCP5 Academic to Studio 5.1 was indeed to Retail. So those of us lucky enough to have done that can now upgrade to FCP7. Seems almost too good to be true.

That really sounds too good to be true.
After you crossgraded from 5 to 5.1 when you open it does it still say Academic? I did the crossgrade back then but when I open it I still get the Academic on FCP.
Also I wonder if we’ll have to re-purchase most 3rd party plug ins.I am about to make a purchase on a new Macpro and I am trying to come up with the best set up for my use.
Could you please let me know how your installation of the new FCP7 from 5.1 goes?thanks
Paolo
