FCP Timeline Playback Extremely Sluggish
Trying to watch my edits in the timeline viewer and after a few seconds, playback goes haywire…starts to stutter and never recovers.
Footage was shot on Canon 5D and is 1920×1080, I compressed all the footage to AppleProRes.
Currently using FCP 6 on a macbook pro 2.8 GHZ, 4GB Ram, however, when I play this project on my MacPro with 8GB Ram, the same thing happens.
I currently have all the footage(about 200GB worth) on my internal HD…had it on External hooked up through USB and same deal happened.
I’m out of ideas, please help!
Have killed my preferences a handful of times already…Done similar projects before using same conversion techniques and have never had an issue.

Can you watch the Original H.264 files? Do they have the same issue?

USB hard drive…not suited for video playback…especially of ProRes footage. Internal System Drive…same thing…not suited for playback of video footage, especially ProRes.
You need a Firewire 800 drive at least. Or on the MacPro, a SECONDARY internal hard drive that is 7200RPM or faster.

Let me point you in the right direction.
macsales.com At the minimum Voyager Q. Make sure you get 7200 rpm drives.
Consider a RAID for faster throughput. G-Tech, Caldigit, etc. Look at the banner ads on the sides.
