External firewire drive will work fine with DV. The main system drive is not recommended as it will drop frames all the time as the system accesses system resources from time to time.”

    While this is ordinarily good advice, we have observed something odd with some flat panel iMacs. In some cases capturing to an external drive always got dropped frames, where capturing to the internal hard drive didn’t drop frames. Then the reverse occurred when trying to play back out. So it was capture to the system drive, then drag it to the external before editing. Strange I know, but we’ve seen it pretty regularly on some of the iMacs. Hopefully these newer ones will move past that…
