FCP SD Kona 3 Downconvert
Posted by Ernie Santella on January 25, 2007 at 11:34 pmI just installed a Kona 3. I cannot get a 720p timeline to playback down-converted. the Kona will output a SD letterboxed image and updates that frame when in stop, but then freezes when I hit play. Shouldn’t it playback realtime, down-converted thru the Kona 3?

January 25, 2007 at 11:55 pmYep, in the Kona Control Panel, set the Primary output to 525/29.97 (NTSC) and set the Secondary to your HD format. That should do it, or you may have to do it the other way around. I’m not in front of my system right now.

January 26, 2007 at 12:06 amNo dice. I’ve tried both ways you mentioned. Same thing, the video freezes on Play. Any other settings I need to set?

January 26, 2007 at 12:14 amWhich Easy Setup are you using and what is your Video Playback set to in your Audio/Video settings in FCP?
BTW, this really belongs in the AJA Kona Forum

January 26, 2007 at 1:02 amSelect the HD easy setup (control-q) within FCP so that the frame buffer is correct (in your case 720p). Now, open the Kona control panel and control click the output that you want to send the down convert to (SDI, SDI2 OR ANALOG). When you control click you will see a drop down menu, and in the secondary section select the SD format you need (ie 525i 29.97 or whatever). FCP should be in HD mode, and the control panel takes care of the rest.

Well, it may not be a Kona issue, as it might be my FCP settings.
Easy Setup = DVCProHD 720p30
Settings = Frame Size: 960 x 720 (Aspect HD (960×720) (16:9)
Pixel Aspect: HD (960×720) Anamorphic Unchecked
Compressor DVCPRO HD 720p60—————-
VIEW>EXTERNAL VIDEO>ALL FRAMES is set
After checking all this, I still get the freeze frame on ‘Play’.

January 26, 2007 at 5:02 amFixed! But not after a bunch of brain-damage.
The problem turned out to be I was selecting under View: 525i/29.97 instead of 720p/59.94. I was thinking it had to be set for SD instead of HD. All is fine and down-converting beautifully!

January 26, 2007 at 5:07 amGood! Glad it’s working. Just remember for down converting, keep FCP in the native easy setup that your footage is in and use the Kona Control panel do any SD conversions you need from there.
