  • FCP Roundtrip – Frame Resizing Resolution Issue

So I ran in to a rather obvious problem on a complicated mult-itrack FCP project that I was grading this week. The project was 5 tracks of multi-format, multi-resolution footage (2K film scans converted to ProRes444, RED ProRes files, Canon 5D 1080p stuff, and some crazy NTSC and PAL standard def stuff… a nightmare of formats). The editor had done alot of crazy frame resizing in FCP that was animated with keyframes etc.

Naively, I thought that the FCP/Resolve Roundtrip would render out the native resolution of the video files (ie if its 2K, then the file would be 2K out of resolve even in a 1080p timeline). Realizing now that this was a bit naive on my part, as resolve renders everything at the new project resolution set in the config tab. So obviously back in FCP everything was resized wrong as the new frame sizes changed and the percentages and center points were all relative to the old frame sizes.

Is there a solution to this? Am I missing something obvious (couldn’t find anything in the manual on this). We simply did all our frame resizing in resolve and wiped it clean in FCP on the return trip but it was VERY time consuming to repeat this editors ridiculous frame resizes in resolve. Only other option I see is just to output a baked quicktime to preserve all that resizing work on the front end for multi format stuff as complicated as this.

I had pretty similar problem lately.

Just rendered out baked qt and readjusted in fcp all zoom ins.

I was lucky as i just had 1080p but the idea is the same.

In the other hand there is not reason for BM at the moment to go deep on that
as we have to wait out what will go one with fcpx round tripping.
