FCP Pro 7 Academic
Posted by Randall Champion on May 9, 2013 at 5:31 pmI am sure this has been addressed, but I could not find it. What are the differences from the Standard and Academic versions of FCP Pro 7?

May 9, 2013 at 6:59 pmWell that part I already knew. My question was what is the difference between the 2 programs?

May 9, 2013 at 8:24 pmNothing. They are identical in every way.
Difference is in the licensing. Academic can’t be used to generate a profit (only for educational purposes), and isn’t eligible for upgrade pricing. That last part is moot, as there is to upgrade.

May 9, 2013 at 8:59 pmThanks. I teach video production and we have been using PC’s and Sony Vegas to edit, but as we are now upgrading we thought that we would be on board with the majority of creative people and switch to Macs and FCP. Hence the question.

May 9, 2013 at 9:35 pmDon’t teach FCP 7. It’s 4 years old, and was discontinued two years ago. Teach Adobe Premiere Pro or Avid…FCP-X possibly. FCP 7 is dead.

May 9, 2013 at 10:35 pmNot to contradict Shane, but to re-phrase what he said:
Don’t teach editing on FCP7. Teach EDITING. Do it in as platform-agnostic a way as possible, and your students will have skills that never go out of style.
