  • FCP Print to video HDV printing 4×3 not 16×9

    Hi all,
I’m trying to lay off an HDV sequence 1440X1080, 1080i, 29.97 to an HDV mini dv tape. The deck is sony hvr 1500. After much futzing around I got my deck and fcp to get along and see each other. The deck reads that it is an hdv tape and records the playback but the output is somehow cropping the footage to 4×3. On my fcp playback it is playing out on my monitor 16×9.
Anyone know where the crop is happening? Is there a Sony deck setting I’m not aware of or is there a setting in fcp to ensure that it outputs 16×9? As far as I can tell, the sequence is playing correctly.
    My a/v device specs are:
Playback output: digital cinema desktop preview main/mirror ondesktop
    audio: default
Different output for edit to tape/print to video checked
    video: hdv1440x1080 60i
    audio hdv
    device control: hdv basic

    thanks so much in advance,
    sarah

Is what you are seeing cropped to 4.3 or is it squeezed to 4.3?

All HD / HDV is 16.9. True HD 16.9 is either 1920×1080 or 1280×720.

1440×1080 becomes 16.9 by stretching the 1440 pixels from square to rectangular to make the whole image the same width as square pixels would at 1920×1080. The replay deck for the format automatically replays the 16.9 aspect ratio.

If you are looking at 1440×1080 as square pixels (in Quicktime or similar) it will not appear to be 16.9.

it is cropped 4×3, so the L and R edges of 16×9 are cut off.
