I am editing with Final Cut Pro 7 with a Mac Pro 8-core system and a Sony DSR-1800 DVCAM deck. I am able to capture from the deck just fine through firewire, but when it comes to playing back footage it will not work. I am just capturing and playing DV-NTSC 720×480 footage. I have checked all of the options I can think of and it still does not work.

I was unable to connect the deck to the firewire 800 port on the Mac so I purchased a PCI-e card with firewire 400 ports on it and it is working great for capturing footage.

I have also checked all of the settings on the Sony DSR-1800 deck too. I even tried playing back footage through a couple handycams and still the same problem. FCP will capture from all those devices but will not play back.

Has anyone else had this problem? Could it be the PCI-e firewire 400 card? FCP does not give me any errors or anything. It is acting like everything is working great and allows me to select the viewing option for firewire NTSC-DV playback.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.
