    Hi everybody,

I’m wondering whether the new Mac Mini is up to the task. This is ONLY a home system, and I’m currently running a 350Mhz G4 which is slow as can be, but just workable.

Apparently the new Mac Mini has a cheap graphics card: how will this affect editing? Will it mean that full screen previews can’t use the full resolution? Or is it irrelevant when editing DV res footage, which is all I’d be doing.

This machine is just for showreels and mucking around at home: at work I use high-spec FCP and Avid suites, I know it’s not going to be close to those in performance. I like the appearance of the Mini and the cheap price, I know an iMac or 2nd hand G4 would be faster.

For what you want to do, sure it will work fine, but you’ll need the Universal Version of FCP 5 which is supposed to start shipping this month.

Just get an external drive for your media.

Even the original mini would’ve been a better performer than that ol’ G4 350. The new graphics card should be quite a bit better than the one in your 350, which is a 16mb card if I remember – AGP. Unless you have the original G4 350 which had PCI graphics.
