    Hi all,
I’m new to the site and new to FCP. Forgive me if this question seems basic; and if it’s been answered, a litle direction to the post would be great.

I have FCP 6.0 and my editor had FCP 5.0 -I have a non-profit 1/2 hour doc. with too many tapes to dump in his lap for the price so I want to log the footage on an external HD and lay it on the line for him so he can just do his magic with transitions, sound, graphics, etc. He is not in a postition to upgrade (he has too many big projects in the works on 5.0) and I have just been told that 6.0 is not backward compatable. The terms EDL and XML have been thrown my way but I don’t know how to use them properly..any help?

If all you’re looking to do is capture the tapes for him that’s doable.

Log and capture all the footage to an external drive using FCP6. He can open a new project file in FCP5 and import the source files stored in the “capture scratch” folder that you created.

You don’t have to worry about backwards compatibility problems.

Thanks…but, I want to log and capture and then lay it all out on a timeline for him. There is a lot of soundbyte/BROLL stuff I don’t want him to have to deal with.
