Then use Media Manager, COPY, and delete unused…add handles. This will copy ONLY what is used in the project, with handles, making new media and a new project file. Then just use that and delete the rest.

I do this constantly.

Thankfully that is a process I’m familiar and comfortable with. Yet the way I have my project files organized is one project file per theatre, with several timelines, one for each theatrical show. I might want to keep the entire footage from one production and not another.

If this continues to be an issue I will simply create a new project file for every show. I was just trying to apply another level of organiziation, which predictably made things less organized.

I was just wondering whether I could apply media manager on a clip by clip, or timeline by timeline basis, without creating a copy and applying changes across the entire project file.

You can have MM affect the actual clips and the actual project, but it’s highly unrecommended. Not copying the clips and creating a new project pretty much gives you zero margin for error.

What you might want to do is to run the normal media manager process, then open the resulting project. Copy the resulting sequence and bin into the normal project with all the bins and organization, then ditch the project file created by the media manager. That’s what I do when I rarely (once every few years maybe) even use the media manager. For the same reason, I have no use for the resulting project. It has no bins or organization.

How can you pull out footage…pull out ONLY the footage you want from a master clip, without making a NEW clip? Have to do that. No idea about Applying changes across the entire project file. I think that FCP can import that new clip into the existing one, but you cannot reconnect this file with all of your sequences that use only that new clip. You have to recut it in…AFAIK.

Whenever I MM, I don’t have connection errors. What version of FCP are you using? What footage type? What kind of MM are you doing?

Dear Shane,
I should be more specific : we have MMed parts of a long sequence onto a drive, for use by a 2nd editor. Then tried to reconnect these parts to the original master clips, after they were re-edited.
But it reconnected several groups of clips wrongly: with their IN & OUT points modified, seemingly randomly.

We’re using FCP v6. The footage is DVCPro HD 720p24. And MM COPY, for this sequence, because of limited drive space.
Our problem is two fold:
1) When reconnecting this sequence, groups of clips are a different part of their master clip.

2) Now we’re adding some entire master clips to this sequence.
Will we be able to MM the resulting sequence – mixing master clips and MMed ones?
