Can’t do that…not with FCP alone. Once you make new clips that have different DURATIONS and IN and OUT points…FCP won’t connect them properly. Not even if you ask it nicely.
What you need is FCPReconnect, a great application by a fellow named Bouke (who patrols these boards). That will reconnect the edit your 2nd editor has done to the existing LONG clips.

Or did you not media manage the footage deleting unused? Did you copy the FULL clips?
