I have had great luck passing all station’s technical evaluation using FCPs “make legal” in standard def. I just used it in a 90 1080i HD project however and got burned. My internal FCP scope assured me that all was well but A&E rejected it and when I checked the areas of concern on an HD scope at a station they were correct. White levels on DVE borders which my scope read as 96 ire were in fact 106 on the external $15K scope!

Has anyone experienced this? Does the “make legal not work in the HD realm? What is the scope showing me, a downconverted, made legal version of what I am looking at? Perhaps someone knows a workaround?

I’ve used a combination of Broadcast Safe, 3-Way CC and Levels filter on about 26 episodes for the Food Network with no rejection. I really work on the levels in the 3-Way first before applying the Broadcast Safe Filter.

This year we’ve transitioned over to using Final Touch HD for all our Color Correction and color levels. It’s flawless with colors and broadcast safe.

    HD only. No SD.

Forgot to ask, did you get burned on luminance levels or super black?

Luminance only and basically just those white DVE borders. My scope said they were fine which puzzles me.

Are they ok before you applied the Broadcast safe? I always create my “whites” at 85% luminance, never 100%

I made them 96ire then added the make legal for the shots themselves, mostly to clip any chroma spikes. I will stick to 85 from now on I can tell you. We ended up renting the Sony HDCan deck again for fixes. Not good!

I find it funny that you are at the Food Network! I am sitting here digitizing Simply Ming for PBS. (Roasted Garlic Asian Pesto) I am working on my 4th season of this series.

I’m not at the Food Network, I just provide Post services for the one show. They have some very stringent requirements there and what got us in the initial testing was the blacks. I forgot FCP can output superblack so I got burned on that one.

We did about 3 months of testing before I ever delivered an actual episode to them. Now I’m in the starting phase of testing with another HD network to ensure our levels are proper on show delivery to them.

    Walter,

Do you mean specifically when you say “Super black?” Do you mean 0 ire vs 7.5?
