  • FCP loses media, and worse – CHANGES media!!

    Hey Folks,

Having real problems with my system holding onto media. A couple of projects I’ve worked on, I’ve finished the edit – moved onto another programme for half an hour (different project and project name), then came back to the original edit I was doing, and FCP has suddenly throw lots of clips offline. The media is still there on the raid, and some of the time, I’m lucky enough that’ll it let me re-connect the media, but other times, if I select a clip to reconnect, FCP won’t actually give me the clip in the reconnect window to set to reconnect!! Fortunately (touch wood) this hasn’t happened on my current project, so I can’t provide a screen grab, but it has happened before, and is a complete pain in the backside.

However, a problem I AM having right now is that the audio clips are changing. I’ve come back into a programmee to make a master of it, but there’s five or 6 clips in the sequence that have changed the first half, or the entire clip. So, if the guy originally said “Well, it was a great day out, and I’m glad I’ve come here” it now says – “I’m glad I’ve come here… out, I’m glad I’ve come here”.

I’ve used a bunch of audio effects (all real time) on the clip, but I can’t see that affecting anything. The timecodes in the TC window all line up properly, there’s no split in the edit, and if I match frame back to the original clip, the error is in there as well. In this specific instance that’s led me to post this, I’ve been able to re-connect the audio with error, which has now gone back to normal again.

Does anyone have any idea why it suddenly ejects or messes with the original media? Is it a 5.02 thing? Is it time to ask the boss for more money (after spending

I can honestly say I have never seen this issue with any of our FCP systems in 5 years of running FCP.

Sounds like an array problem. How fragmented are your drives?

Might try to delete your rendered files and rerender your project, especially if you’ve rendered the audio effects. Maybe FCP is somehow loosing the correct links to the render files.
    Worth a try?

Had exactly the same problem last night when trying to lay off to tape.
Tracked it down to a corrupted clip. Redigitising the clip fixed it, 3 hours later 🙁

Try making the clip temporarily offline I think its CTRL B (sorry not on a mac at the moment). But it’s like “disable” clip. Then, enable the clip. That flushes problems with wonky video it may apply especially if you have filters. It does a tidy reset.

hmmm… we had this problem with 5.0.4 and our XSAN…. but it would always reconnect properly if it did go “media offline” Upgrading our SAN software and getting to 5.1.1 everything settled down. I was told there were issues with FCP using Spotlight to keep track of clips but spotlight did not function properly on a SAN network.

No doubt. This kind of thing happens to me if stuff has been copy and pasted to other timelines and then changed way down the road. Clearing out the render files or at least using the render manager to clear out the render files for that specific timeline help out tremendously.

    Hey folks,

Thanks for the advice, I’ll be sure to try to make media offline suggestion next time it happens. I’m using an Infortrend Raid system for the drives, so I’ll work out how to check how fragmented their are, and report back.

    Thanks again,

    John

I had a similar problem when I was using clips on timelines to cut into other timelines, I stoped doing that and have never had the problem after.

    Just for everybody’s fault bank:-

I was on Xsan, running 5.1.1 Tried clip enable etc, ran FCP rescue & fixed prefs.
Had a lot of clips going offline/online Problem clip was in timeline codec, no filters.

Will look at the Xsan log to see if there were any problems.
