    Hi all,

I’m trying to export a clip from FCP with an alpha channel to use in After Effects. It’s a simple graphic that I’ve extruded to make 3d.

The first export through QT conversion was fine – I selected millions of colors+ and it’s imported into AE as a straight alpha channel, no problems.

I then decided to make the 3D extrusion a gradient rather than shading. Now, no matter what I do, FCP will not export it with an alpha channel. It appears to, but then importing it into AE, back into FCP or into QT and it’s on a black solid background.

I’ve tried re-interpreting the clip in all 3 programs but they are all telling me it is already alpha’d. It isn’t.

I’ve tried rebooting, but the problem persists.

all I can think of is that FCP doesn’t like the gradient setting on the extrusion for use with an alpha channel, but this doesn’t really make sense either.

    Any ideas?

I just tried something similar… No problems exporting gradients etc with alpha as a tiff with millions + selected. Might try that unless you’ve an animation going on and need a QT movie. If so choose ProRes 4444 or the Animation codec and it should work just fine. But I’d use the still if the text doesn’t animate.

It’s an animation so I have to export as QT.
I tried exporting it again without rendering first but that just gave me a solid black
Norhing with no graphic at all. Weird.
I’ll give exporting as prores 444 a go tomorrow but something’s telling me that
    Won’t work either… 🙁

What is the sequence setting? It should be ProRes 4444 to start with I’d think. You created the text with Boris or?

The sequence setting is animation. the graphic itself is one of Andrew Kramer’s flourishes from his Evolutions set. With 3D extrusion I’ve discovered you can make it look a lot like those nice ‘clay’ renders you see a lot of in 3D Max etc.

I’ll try a different sequence setting and see what happens.
