FCP edit to tape via firewire to AJ-HD1400 frame accuracy issue
Posted by James Anton on January 14, 2010 at 9:13 pmI’m trying to output a number of sequences to an AJ-HD1400 via firewire. Assemble edit output of an entire sequence, about half of the time, the edit begins a frame or two late. I have tried duplicating the deck control preset and adjusting the Protocol (between Apple FireWire and DVCProHD FireWire), Time Source (between DV Time or LTC) and Playback Offset, but nothing is giving me consistent results; sometimes the edit is correct, sometimes it isn’t. I’m outputting to DVCPRO stock (but recording DVCProHD).
Any help/insight would be greatly appreciated.Doug Beal replied 16 years, 4 months ago 7 Members · 7 Replies -

January 14, 2010 at 10:36 pmIn my experience, machine control with firewire is not consistently frame accurate. If you’re off by a couple frames, well that’s about as good as it gets. Some on this board my claim frame accuracy with FW, but I’ve never seen it.
Also beware of audio pops and crackles when using FW to master with the AJ HD-1400. It was a known issue a couple years ago and I’m not sure if it was ever resolved.

January 15, 2010 at 12:13 amI do have an AJA Kona card, so I will try going out SDI next. If I come straight out of the AJA into the AJ-HD1400 deck via SDI, will I need a HD reference signal to both the computer and the deck? I’m not sure if I have an HD reference generator (Tri-Level Sync, yes?).

i beleive the 1400 will accept external timecode down the Firewire. I am not sure if FCP sends the sequence timecode down the firewire.
If so, just make a sequence of all the sequences you need to lay off, and do a print to video instead of edit to tape. If FCP sends the timecode down, it will be accurate.
If not, you either have to accept the 2 frame error, or find a way to use the RS422 control port on the 1400 which is Frame accurate, usually via a capture card or other such device.
hope this helps

If your only off by 1 or 2 frames using firewire count yourself lucky. I had a 1200 that was off by 12. I got it down to +/- 1 by creating a capture pre-set, but it was never frame accurate. My 1400 is much better, but if you need frame accurate then you need to go SDI.

January 19, 2010 at 10:30 pmThe 1400 deck records 720P 59.94 or 1080i 59.94 depending on menu settings
you can use SD blackburst fine for this. If you don’t have a BB gen order an AJA Gen10 which will give you both black and/or tri level and 1 AESIf you can’t wait for ref lock the 1400 to incoming vid and put the Kona on freerun.
to QC put the deck back in internal ref and check your layoff.Doug Beal
