  • FCP Dropping Frames when Capturing 29.97 1080i

    Please Help!!!!!

I am onlining a show on FCP 5.1 from HDCAM to 1080i 29.97. I am using a 4 X 2.5 GHZ power PC G5 with 8gb of DDR2 SDRAM, coming in SDI with a Kona 3 card and it has dropped frames like crazy throughout the whole show. I am capturing to a Rorke Galaxy HDX 16F2 raid with 6 TB of storage. I did not check abort capture if dropped frames in my preferences and now there are dropped frames everywhere, where there it misses a frame and puts in the previous frame creating a double frame. I am going back and recapturing the problem shots but continue to have this problem especially in longer shots. These dropped frames are not on the tape and the tape plays fine on the monitor. I am under a deadline that I am not going to make unless I get some help. Any ideas would greatly be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Rich

Throughput to your array is too slow if you’re dropping frames. Are you capturing 10bit 29.97? What’s your drive speed? Should be around 200 – 250mb/s for 10bit uncompressed 1080i.

I am capturing 1080i 29.97 8 bit…The raid is a rorke galaxyhdx 16f2 6tb raid connected by fibre channel, How do I check throughput?

Go to AJA’s support area and download a little app there that will test your throughput on that array… It’s formatted Mac OS Extended, right?

I used the aja app and I am getting at least 250 mb/s of throughput for writing.

Are you sure your scratch disk is set correctly?
Drop frames are not being caused by the card. Drop frames is a storage problem.

your data flow should be at about 165-170 mgs a second for capture. How full is the array?

The capture scratch is set to the raid, I already have 2.4 terabytes loaded. There is still 3.5 terabytes of headroom. Also we don’t have hi def reference here, the reference on the deck is set to input video on the srw-5500. Could the reference possibly be the problem? This is really getting frustrating.

We have now tried two super fast raids and both are not working…I think it must be pci card or the kona card.

OK…what slot is the RAID controller card in, and what slot is the Kona card in? And do you have any additional cards in the computer?

Typically it is Controller Card in slot 4, Kona in slot 3, and nothing in slot 2. Slot 1 is the graphics card.

Yes the Kona and the PCI card are in those slots. Now we have also tried switching out the PCI card which didn’t work. I also tried the DVC PRO HD Codec which had no problems capturing. So it is only having a problem capturing uncompressed 1080i both 8 bit and 10 bit. I have tried two different raids both of which when tested have more than enough throughput for Uncompressed. One was running 250 mbs the other around 400 mbs. I reinstalled the Kona software, trashed my preferences… I am running out of ideas and patience.
