Under the motion tab you can crop and feather edges…however lately when I go to feather just one edge, all the edges end up being feathered. Maybe I’m delusional, but I swear this has not been the case in the past. Is there something buggy going on, or have I changed some sort of setting?
And if you can’t feather just one edge in the motion tab, are there any other solutions within FCP? The soft edge effect does just what it says…makes the edge soft. But it doesn’t eliminate the hard edge completely…if that makes sense.
    Any help is much appreciated!

The standard crop tool has always feathered all edges. There are third party tools, I think CGM has one, that allow you to feather the sides independently.

    All the best,

I don’t know if this will work for you, Dave, but you might crop your video–specifying feathered edges–and then use an unfeathered matte or mask (placed on another video track) that overlays the first layer and has the effect of cropping out just the feathering you didn’t want. (In other words, you’re doing a second stage of cropping.) I haven’t tried it, but it’s a thought in case you’ve completely run out of ideas.

I hope my suggestion makes sense. Better yet, I hope it’s easy and works. 🙂

Alex Gollner aka ‘alex4d’ has a great free crop plugin that will allow you to crop and feather individual edges:
