  • FCP Crashing – large project file, XDCam EX-1 footage

I think I’ve read most of the prior posts about projects with XD Cam footage crashing repeatedly in FCP. However, I’m hoping that someone has discovered something since this was last brought up…

There are three editors working on this. Early in the project, everything was fine.

We’re working with 20+ hours of XD Cam Ex-1 footage, and at one point the project file was over 400MB – this is around when the crashes started happening. At first I was able to fix it by moving the project file to a local drive (the media has always been local). Then the crashes started happening again, and I fixed it by not loading my keyboard layout. After a few hours of working, it started crashing again whenever I would try to move clips or sequences between projects – at this point, FCP crashes pretty much whenever I have more than one project file open at once, and the other editors are experiencing this too. Even though I’m now working with much smaller project files.

We have run tests on the disks, tests on the RAM, trashed FCP’s preferences, repaired permissions on everything, to no avail.

I have not had any problems with my three year old MBP at home, however.

My question is, has anyone who has experienced this problem actually found a way to keep it from happening?

    My system:

    Mac Pro, 2 x 2.8 Quad-Core
    8 GB RAM
    Radeon HD 4870
    Two Cinema HD Displays
    3 internal hard drives

I’d say your project is TOO BIG! This is the threshold after which you’re going to start seeing issues.

Unless you can bring the project size down significantly, you’ll probably continue to see issues.

Yup, u gotta pair down the size of the project file. Break it up into separate projects. We continually “save as” with our projects as a safety b/c FCP will become corrupt with its project files if left to grow to big.

Right guys, but I did pare down the project file and it’s still happening.
