Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy FCP Crashing

  • Posted by Gerald Nott on April 24, 2009 at 8:01 pm

FCP has been crashing repeatedly. Every time is has happened, it will happen while accessing media on an external hard drive (I haven’t had a case yet where it crashes on footage located on the internal harddrive, but I rarely use media there any ways)
I am running Final Cut 6.0.5
    OSX 10.5.6
Processor 2x 2.26 Ghz Quad-Care Inel Xeon Nelf
    Memory 12 GB

Sometimes there will be an hour between the crash, other times just minutes. I had an Mbox2 (connected through USB) I was using on my previous system (a Power PC G5) Since I am not using ProTools on my new system I downloaded the CoreAudio_installer_v742 so that I can use the MBox as a standalone without needing protools.

Now when I run final cut, after sometimes, usually when i start to play a clip from a new section, or another clip, I get colored pinwheel. it will remain frozen up, I attempt to force quit, and final cut goes away, but the icon in the dock still remains active. Once this freeze up occurs I have trouble accessing any quicktime or audio in other programs (such as, if I try to play Itunes after final cut freezes, it too will freeze) I can still navigate the internet, but anytime I try to play audio or video that particular program will freeze)

This has happened on multiple projects on different drives, and I’ve used the same projects on other computers with the same specs as this one without any problems. The only difference between this computer and the others is the MBox is being used for audio output.

So far I only seem to experience these crashes starting in Final Cut.

Does this sound like an MBox problem to anyone else out there? And any possible fixes for this. Thanks.

Have you trashed prefs and repaired permissions? It’s the first thing I do whenever FCP acts strangely. Also run Disk Warrior. Do you have a capture card or other I/O device besides the Mbox? Maybe that could cause a conflict.

No other cards installed in the MacPro. This is pretty much out of the box, the only other external devices that are being used is 1 or 2 Western Digital harddrives. Again, I’ve used the hard drives with the Mbox previously on the G5 without any problems. The system has been running fine the last couple days without the Mbox attached. I have done a complete reinstall from the master disks early but continue to have the problem. I’ll try trashing the preferences again… maybe something becomes mixed up when the CoreAudio 742 is installed.

Trash prefs, repair permissions and run Disk Warrior. If you don’t have it, order it. To me, it’s the one indispensable program to have if you’rea Mac user. It’s saved my bacon many times. A great program.

I had the same problem on 2 systems, my MBP and also my iMac, both are Intel machines. The MBP had a new Mbox 2 Mini and the iMac had an original Mbox. FCP crashed frequently until I unplugged the Mbox on both machines. Due to deadlines I too just unplugged the Mbox and used a mini-jack to 1/4 cable for my monitors or used headphones. This is a recent occurrence, I’ve used this same setup for years with no problems, must be a something to do with a OS X 10.5.6 update. because there has been no updates to the Core Audio Driver. MY MBP has Pro Tools LE 8 and the iMac only has the Core Audio Driver.

Spent allot of time using Disk Warrior, Techtool Pro and repairing disk permissions, to no avail, so I wouldn’t waste your time on that.

If you can live without your Digidesign Hardware for awhile I would wait for another update to fix the problem.

I know it;s been a while since this thread has been started. I’m having the exact same problems with FCP and my Mbox mini. I’m on 10.5.8 and a Macbook Pro. Has anyone been able to fix the issue? Thanks.
