FCP -> Color rendering issues
Posted by Andreas Herzog grimso on August 31, 2007 at 7:39 amYoz!
I’ve recently updated my system to Intel Mac and Final Cut Studio 2.
This is my first project with this new FCS2 package, and I’m trying to sort out how to use Color to grade my project.
Everything is smooth in Color.. but when I’m trying to render the clip is starts to render the whole source media from start to end, not my IN and OUT points from FCP. All looks normal in the color timeline and when i send the project back to FCP the sequence is OK.
1) What am I missing about rendering just IN and OUT points from FCP?
2) Is there some special way to export the project to color, beside the command “send to Color”?
3) Is there a forum for Color?Regards

As long as you use the “Send to Color” command from your timeline, it should only render what’s in your timeline. I’ve never seen it render entire clips in almost 2 years of using the app. Are you sending a timeline to Color or the raw clips?
3) Is there a forum for Color?
You can search for all other forums using the “Change Forum” feature.
The Color Forum is here.

September 6, 2007 at 11:04 amHi again.
Q from Walter: Are you sending a timeline to Color or the raw clips?
A: Im sending a timeline. This is what have happend.. I’ve used the “send to color” command, graded all clips (about 240 clips) and rendered. It seems to render IN and OUT points of 90% of the clips the other 10% its rendering the whole file. Im using a hard disk camcorder so some of the raw clips are quite long. Ex one clip is about 2 mins long and I’m using about 10 secs.. thats allot of rendering I don’t need… anyways its rendering over night so I can live with it as long as its renderd.
My new issue is when I send it back to final cut some clips are all out of synch, the IN and OUT points at some clips are wrong and I need to “finetune” sequences again.. this is annoying!
Some clips are just a second long when its supposed to be 5 secs long, just showing the first second of the clip. I then need to extract the clip and re-time it to the original timing (in that case its good that color have renderd the whole file:P)
What I’m I doing wrong? Is it too much to have 240 clips in a color project?
Im using 2 video layers from FC v1 and v2, can this cause a problem?
I have some motion files that are not renderd in the timeline, can this affect the whole sequence?
The clips have no speed adjustments or general motion keyframes.
Im using AppleProRes (HQ) for all my clips. (1920×1080 HD)
I’ve set the Handles in color settings to 00:00:01:00.I still got time to do it all over again so any suggestions are very much appreciated!
Thanks!

April 16, 2009 at 6:17 amHi,
I am having exactly the same problem. About one third of my clips to be rendered in Color render the entire source clip. And because of the way I work some of these can be 41 minutes long.
For example the project I am working on at the moment has 3 source rushes each 41 mins long. The project in Color has 39 clips from these 3 and the clips are often rendering the same 41 min tape again and again.
And this is a problem for me, I don’t wish to wait this long for it to render.

October 8, 2010 at 12:10 amI’m having the same problem too..
I’m using XDCAM EX + 5D Stuff and on both it’s rendering the whole source file instead of just my trimmed clip sent from Final Cut.
I have tried with handles set and not set.
I just rendered with a 00:00:01:00 handle and it is still playing through the whole source as it renders.Surely this is a common problem..? It did this straight out of the box. I haven’t fiddled with anything weird at all.

October 8, 2010 at 5:28 amDo you have any speed changes made in FCP? In my case baking the clips as recommended by Walter Biscardi solved the problem.

October 8, 2010 at 6:53 amI am sure if you search the Color forum, there may be a better chance to find the answer to this question. As a Color user since 1.5 was released, I have to say that this hasn’t been my experience but you haven’t said what version you are running.
