FCP Canvas and Viewer show up white in fcp 7

Did you look at the Color Tab in Displays under System Preferences. Is there a profile for the iMac? If there is, you have done evrything.

Yes, checked the System Settings – Display – Color – there is a setting for the iMac.

Found yet another similar problem – tried DVD Studio Pro – selected one of their menus – it appeared for an instant and then turned white. Imported one m2v file, tried to play it, it turned white. Something in the new FC Studio is making all the videos appear white. But videos show fine in the Quicktime Player.

It may be a silly comment but…… Is the iMac setting selected(highlighted) ? many of my users see it at the top of the list and assume it is the active profile.

Another shot in the dark you might have already tried. Uncheck “Show profiles for this display only” and select another profile from the list and try FCP again.
If it solves the problem – recalibrate that profile. The old one might be corrupt.

I believe you have solved this problem! I opened System Preferences, Displays, Color. The only profile that appeared was “iMac.” I unchecked “Show profiles for this display only,” and 3 other profiles appeared. Then, when I selected any of those – including “iMac,” the problem of the white windows in FCP and DVD Studio Pro seemed to go away! I need to check this with my project which is stored on my other drive, but it looks very promising!
How in the world did you know to try such an obscure setting?

In my trouble shooting with all the other remedies, the only thing left was to check the Display. (it was a display problem, after all) The display showed all the resolutions. When I checked the color tab – there was nothing. I found that the ColorSync folder was not in the system drive library folder. After copying this folder from another computer – rebooted and it worked.
Tim Dring in the last post makes a good point about highlighting the iMac setting, if it was there. Mine was not.

Checked it with my other FCP project on my other drive; you solved the problem!
A philosophical question: I would guess that the System Preferences – Displays – Color – Profiles should affect the “look” of the entire screen; and they do; some profiles make it a little warmer, some a little brighter, etc. Why would the Profile affect only the Viewer and Canvas windows in FCP?

In looking back at the posts, Tim Dring posted a similar fix on April 21. For some reason my profiles did not rebuild, but he was having the same problem and it fixed his computers, which were iMacs. So actually, he found the fix for the iMac (and I believe mine as well) I want to give credit where it is due.

Ok, so my last post is out of sync as i was replying on the move.
as an explanation as to what i think is happening regarding this issue here is what i have found..
At the college here, we run our iMac’s, Mac Books, Mac Minis and Mac Pros on an Active Directory network (not my choice i must add!). Each user has an individual user account that roams with them allowing files and settings to travel too.
The color settings are an individual preference allowing customized desktops..Great, however at each login the mac starts up and just reads the color profile that has been saved in the users preferences.
As all Macs pretty much all the color profiles built in it will use the defined one even if is the wrong monitor/display panel and not automatically re-calibrate which is where going to the color tab of the display preferences sits.
The OS itself will just muddle through along with most programs, the FC suite of programs is, so far, the only program i have found with a specific requirement for the correct profile (i guess it knows the display type and requires the correct profile selected) or in the case of the missing profiles folder, it will fall back to an os default, like the old 640×480 display of windows if something went wrong.
Long winded i know, but just wanted to explain what imho is happening, there may be a solution to this and that is to remove the profile preference at each logoff, forcing a recreation at the next login, something i will be looking into over the next month or too. i will post my findings if anyone is interested.
