  • FCP Audio – compressor/limiter causes loss of sync

Hi all, here’s a problem I’ve had over the last year or so, and haven’t found a mention of it in the forums. Anyone else experience this and know of a permanent solution?

When FCP’s compressor/limiter filter is applied to a clip, during playback and output a portion of the audio will occasionally jump out of sync. The sequences play back perfectly multiple times (whether partially or fully rendered) before this problem suddenly occurs. Doesn’t usually throw off the sync of the entire clip in sequence – once the out-of-sync audio has reached its end, synced audio returns. This is not a gradual drift ie: sample rates.

Once the clip’s audio is messed up it stays that way through multiple viewings. Deleting the audio compressor removes the problem, but it can still return during later playback if compressor has been reapplied. Trashing FCP prefs seems to get rid of the problem for a while but it eventually returns.

I have an example QT file of the glitch if you need to see it.

    FCP 6.0.3
    OS X 10.4.11
    2 x Dual 3 GHz, 4 GB RAM
(but has happened on various machines, OS versions, and FCP versions)

    Thank you!
    Ben.

Do you “Mixdown for Playback” the audio tracks after your edit?

This can solve numerous audio anomalies.
