I recently recorded some footage on a Sony HDV deck, recording at HD1080i. My FCP 5 system uses a JVC DV/HDV source deck. It only supports 720p. I have not, up until now, recorded anything in the HD format, so this is still very new to me. The deck does not support the 1080i format. Furthermore, FCP does not seem to even support this deck in the HDV mode. When I switch the Firewire setting on the deck to HDV, FC no longer communicates with the deck. Also, I notice in the Capture Preset settings, there is no setting for HDV–only DVCPro HD1080 or 720. I am trying to borrow the same deck I recorded on to do the editing, but now I’m wondering if FCP will even let me edit from the Sony HDV deck using Firewire. Can anyone help me with this? Also, I am still learning FCP, so I have many other questions to ask, but this is the immediate concern. Thank.

Could you give specific information? What deck is it exactly?

Most likely your media cannot be played back from that deck, and you cannot capture it. You will need a 1080i HDV playback device, camera or deck.

There are presets for 10180i HDV. Look in Easy Setup.

This should be on the Basics forum.

    All the best,

    Thanks, Tom. It’s a JVC BR-HD50.
Where are the “Easy Setup” and “Basic Forum”? Are these in FC or in Creative Cow?

I’m wondering if my version of FCP doesn’t support HDV, but v. 6 does? I just saw a screen shot about recapturing HD, and it showed a selection for “HDV 1080i”. I don’t have that selection in Basic Setup or Capture Preset. Do I need to upgrade to v.6 to get HDV support?

The Final Cut Basics forum is on Creative COW.

Easy Setup is in the Final Cut Pro menu.

    All the best,

HDV is supported in v5. What computer is this? Was the software correctly installed from the disks, and does the computer meet FCP system specifications for that version? Have you run software update and updated to the latest versions of FCP5? What version are you running?

    All the best,

    Leonard,

Watch this tutorial https://library.creativecow.net/articles/biscardi_walter/realtime_sequences.php before doing anything else in FCP and memorize it, it tells you exactly how to setup your FCP projects properly, which, as Tom has pointed out, should always be done by starting with the proper Easy Setup.

OK, I see now that I have 4.5 installed on the computer, even thought I have the disks and documentation for Studio 1.01, which includes FCP 5. I inherited this system (G5) from someone else, and I thought v. 5 was installed, but apparently it wasn’t. The previous owner left so much stuff on the hard drive that I have to delete his old projects to free up enough space to install Studio. Once I get that done, I’ll see where I’m at. Also, thanks to David for the tip about the tutorial. I’ll check it out.
