FCP aliasing
I’ve just moved into the world of FCP from AVID and am having some issues. I just cut my first spot on FCP (shot in DVC Pro HD 720p 24) and have the easy set up using the KONA DVCPRO 720HD 24. Everything is looking great exported using the project setting as a self contained file. Issue comes in when I bring it into compressor or DVDSP. In compressor, if I use the standard “Best” DVD settings I get massive aliasing and the image keeps going to 4×3 and squishes it. If I take the same self contained DVC pro .MOV directly into DVDSP, I can get it to convert down to SD with letterboxing (exactly what I want) but it gets massive aliasing. I’ve searched all the forums and manuals but can’t seem to find the answer. If I take the rendered .MOV into my AVID system, I can get it to compress to MPEG without any aliasing. Again, I’m a newbie with the FCP workflow, so forgive the question. I forgot to add, I’ve played with all sorts of different bit rates and that hasn’t made any difference.

Leave it 16:9. All DVD players do letterboxing internally.
Leave your frame rate 23.98. All DVD players add pulldown where necessary.In Compressor, set the resize quality in the Frame Controls to Better or Best.
Also, for a spot, do your MPEG 2 encoding using CBR (constant bit rate) instead of VBR (which the misleadingly named “best quality” preset uses)Use a bit rate of 7. Going any higher on a DVD-R is risky…some DVD players may choke.
Be sure also to encode your audio to AC-3.You’ll probably need to make your own preset for this.

This is almost the most common FCP question and has been covered heaps of times. Try searching the forum on interlace errors, field dominance errors, aspect ratios in DVDSP.

Thanks John. I really appreciate your input. I’ll give that a shot when I get back into the studio tomorrow. Mike, I figured this must have been covered before but I never thought to search interlacing or problems with the aspect. I thought this must have been a setting with the aliasing. Thanks again guys.
