FCP adds wrong extension to filename..

May 2, 2008 at 7:22 pmHi all, I’ve been using FCP for about 4 years and I’ve never seen this problem. I recently upgraded to an 8core MacPro and Leopard. Since the switch, I’ve noticed that whenever I export a quicktime from FCP, I will get an error if I try to name it with a .mov extension. FCP tells me the correct extension is just “.” (filename.) So I go ahead and name it that way and then have to rename in the finder.
Is there a preference for this somewhere or do I need to trash a preference file or what? I’m at a loss. It’s not really a huge deal, but it can be an inconvenience when I’m dealing with alot of exported files. By the way, I’m using FCP 5.1.4 and I never had this problem on the G5 with Tiger.
Any help would be greatly appreciated..

May 2, 2008 at 7:44 pmcheck your hide extension check box. Its usually set to hide the extension, so its actually already getting the extension. It won’t let you name it .mov.mov and I think the finder is smart enough to know that you just mean to show extension when you add .mov.
This might be a 6.0.3 thing as I had a similiar issue with a still export today and had never seem the dialog before either.

May 2, 2008 at 8:07 pmThanks for responding Brett. I had already tried the “hide extension” option and it doesn’t seem to make any difference. The box is unchecked by default and it still comes up as “filename.” instead of “filename.mov” For some reason FCP thinks the extension should just be the dot without “mov” after it.
Also, I’m running 5.1.4, not 6.0.2
Thanks again for your time though..
