FCP 7.0.3, 4x3Ghz CPU, 6GB Mem, RAID 10 but playback still choppy!
Hi, this is a bit crazy. I am editing a ProRez project and I would consider my MacPro reasonably powerful but when I play for 30 seconds or so the playback goes choppy. I have to stop and start and then get another 30 second chunk playing smoothly, then choppy again.
I am not playing on a external motor or doing any type of playback preview, I do have a Blackmagic Intensity card but am not using it.
I have checked all the drive settings (User/System Settings) and they are all pointing to the RAID array.
Any ideas?

How is the RAID connected to the Mac Pro? Have you done any speed tests such as AJA and Blackmagic apps? Which ProRes? How long is the timeline? More info please.

yes just did, over 50 MB/s both read and write.

ProRes 422>How long is the timeline?
20 mins.Its a 2008 Mac Pro. The project has a lot of subtitles (with drop shadow) but is pretty much straight cuts.
Last night it started almost behaving itself but cant quite play the whole project.

Hmm, you should be fine. Although I had the same issue a while back with 1080p24 HQ material and I upgraded my system to SAS RAID 5 and I haven’t had any problems since. I want to say you need more bandwidth, but FW800 should work fine with ProRes 422 (to a certain point of course, depending on how complicated your timeline is).
Have you tried playing down the timeline without the subtitles? What’s the frame dims on the subtitles, ie are they gigantic?
Also, who makes the RAID and does it have a controller in the chassis or is your computer controlling it?
