  • FCP 7 XML to PPro Crashing

So I’m thinking of making Premiere Pro a viable choice in my setup. I’ve had it for years and keep giving it a chance with CS3, CS4, and now CS5.

So with every new FCP 7 project I have been exporting an xml at some point and trying to take it to Premiere. Usually not with much luck. The only project that has actually worked was a simple DV project that was actually using the DV NTSC codec. My ProRes HD projects all seem to report back a general error, or they seem to come in fine, but the minute I try to play back the sequence or just open it, Premiere crashes hard. Just vanishes and asks if I want to send a crash report.

Premiere runs fine if I start in Premiere and do tutorials and such. It’s all about Pro Res XMLs from FCP 7 that makes it crash.

I’m running a 2007 Mac Pro with 7GB of RAM and Lion. Although, I only tried the XML thing once today in Lion to see if Lion magically cleared up the issue, but it didn’t. Most of the issues have been in Snow Leopard 10.6.7 and 10.6.8.

I’m also using the Matrox MXO2 mini and using that as my setup/playback, etc. Which, works great with the DV sequences. The matrox firmware is fully up to date as well.

    What version of Premiere Pro?

Have you installed the latest updates?

    5.0.4

Yep, the entire suite is updated. From FCS 7, to Lion, to Matrox MXO2 mini, to Adobe Master Collection CS5. You want a crash report?

I’m getting the same issue with a 1080i/59.94 ProRes XML from FCP into Premiere 5.5.0

The XML will import, but as soon as you try and save, it crashes.

On another note, it also crashes when I try to save a new workspace layout.

Running 10.6.7 on a mid 2009 Mac Pro

I did. It wouldn’t let me attach a crash report. Too long. But anyway.

So I just try to open the imported sequence and I never even see it in the timeline. The system thinks for a second and then bye bye. Premiere out.

Exactly the same problem here with prores XML from FCP7 – Everything imports fine and appears correctly on the Timeline- but as PPro starts to create timeline thumbnails, it crashes.
    Mac Pro 3.1 (32or64bit) MacOS10.6.8 – PPro 5.5 + all updates.

I used to be Jon Hiseman but I’m feeling better now.

Install the Premiere Pro CS5.5 (5.5.1) update. It includes fixes for crashes related to FCP XML interchange.

[Todd Kopriva] “Install the Premiere Pro CS5.5 (5.5.1) update. It includes fixes for crashes related to FCP XML interchange.”

i’d already updated Premiere Pro to no avail.

after some investigating, i realized the 720p Prores sequence from FCP became a Sony XDCAM sequence in Premiere. if i created a new sequence based on one of the clips and copied the clips from the problem sequence into it, i could play without crashing. it’s a slightly irritating workaround, but at least i’m not screaming at my system any more. don’t know if the issue is on FCP’s end or Premiere’s, but it’s caused quite a headache.

Sorry, but can you confirm that you’re running Premiere Pro CS5.5 (5.5.1).

You said that you updated, but a lot of people are mistaken when they say that, since this update is not automatically installed.
