FCP 7 Quicktime Exporting Wrong Size
Posted by Jason Tessmer on September 15, 2009 at 6:07 pmI’m working in FCP 7 and exporting a SD sequence to quicktime. My sequence is set at 720×486 at 29.97 10bit Uncompressed. When I export it out as a quicktime, it makes it 655×480. WHAT? Even when I change the “Current Settings” in the export options to Uncompressed 10bit NTSC, it make the QT 655×480. Why is it doing this and how can I fix it?

September 15, 2009 at 6:16 pmYou can change the size in the QT options.
Export with Quicktime Coversion/options/size
You will have the option of 720×486 4×3 or
720×486 16×9 in the pulldown. You can also do a custom size.Brad

September 15, 2009 at 6:21 pmAre you using QuickTime Movie or QT Conversion?
“When I export it out as a quicktime, it makes it 655×480”
How do you know that? Where are you getting this information?

September 15, 2009 at 6:31 pmDrag the converted file into the FCP Browser and examine its dimensions.
The dimensions reported by Quicktime Player can be odd, as its converting an SD non-square pixel size to square for display on a computer screen.

September 15, 2009 at 6:35 pmI’m just using Export > Quicktime Movie. I’m NOT using QT Conversion. I try using conversion also but still get the 655 size. I know that this is the size of the movie and not just some display error cause when dropping the movie into a AE comp it’s 655. I never had this issue on FCP 6.

September 15, 2009 at 7:00 pmHow do you know it’s 655? Where exactly are you seeing that>? Have you brought the file back into FCP and check it’s item properties there?
This upgrade of the application has been out a while, and this is the first instance of this issue I’ve seen.

Tom

September 15, 2009 at 7:26 pmOpening the QT in the QTplayer and opening info tells me the size. Also when importing the QT into After Effects, it also gives me a size of 655. Now, when dropping the QT back into FCP, it reads as 720×486. This is just strange.

September 15, 2009 at 10:20 pmCheck the pixel aspect ratio in After Effects. I’ll bet for some reason its seeing it as square pixels.
Use the “Interpret Footage” dialog to fix that.
