    Hello all,

So I’m running FCP7 on Snow Leopard, system gamma as default 2.2. I’ve got a simple sequence with clips in ProRes 422 (HQ).

When I load the project the clips look too dark in the canvas preview window. When I play, the gamma shifts and the clips appear lighter, more-or-less the correct gamma.

The odd thing is, if I go to sequence settings (command+0), don’t change a thing in the dialog and then click OK, the gamma in the canvas shifts lighter. I’ll say it again, I changed no settings.

So the gamma in the canvas when paused seems OK now. However when I press play now there is a slight gamma change, noticeable mainly in the reds going darker/more saturated.

I’ve never trusted judging colour/gamma in Final Cut but I hoped Snow Leopard and FCP7 would change this. It still seems as gamma buggy as ever though!

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

    Sam

The images below are in this order: 1. Paused, on startup of the project, 2. Paused, after going into settings but not changing anything, 3. Playing, after going into settings but not changing anything.

I have noticed the same thing, And it doesnt seem to have rhyme or reason. one sequence i noticed it in EX CAM codec. Switched to pro res and all was fine. Another sequence (different project) the reverse happened.

    I am using 6.06 and 10.5.8

We are also 6.0.6 on Leopard. Here’s what I found. No matter what size I play back the canvas (100%, 50% etc) as long as there is gray area around all four sides the clip changes gamma when I play the clip. Dark on pause and lighter when I play the sequence.

Now, if I manually scale the canvas window so that part of the top and bottom of the canvas video area is covered up the gamma stays darker no matter what I do.

These kinds of things remind me that we still don’t really operate in a truly Pro environment.

‘These kinds of things remind me that we still don’t really operate in a truly Pro environment.’

Are you monitoring a 10 BIT HDSDI signal from your FCP with a Decklink or AJA card?
If you not, it’s clearly not a Pro environment.

I am and I’M getting the same thing. Sorry, FCP just doesn’t hold water. It’s especially frustrating because I work with several graphics artists and animators. We can’t confirm what’s accurate on my system. Not a good feeling when you’re delivering for broadcast.

I had this same problem and scoured forums everywhere trying to find a solution. I also spent 2 hrs with Apple on the phone but to no avail. FINALLY I FOUND A SOLUTION!!!

I hope this works for you. Go into your system prefs, select display, then change the color profiles of your monitors to “Apple RGB” this fixed the problem for me. So relieved!!!

I have experienced the same problem and pondered the remedy for sometime, so thanks for the post, this does stop the gamma levels in the canvas from changing between pausing and playing back.

However, Whereas my output movie reflected the (lighter) gamma levels present in the canvas when playing back, the canvas now displays the image darker than the output all together.

    Any ideas?

    This might help…

FCP – System Settings – Playback Control tab

Gamma correction option: Accurate seems to be the darker Broadcast Monitor simulation, and Approximate, while not exact, is certainly closer to what I see when I export.

See if this helps for you. I’m running FCP 6.0.6 on OSX 10.6.4

Thankyou for this. I’ve had this gamma-jump problem on-and-off for years. It recently presented itself again. I tried your method and it worked! … with this change — the Apple RGB is NOT the gamma for me, so I *calibrated* the”Cinema HD Display” settings and it seems to be holding.

Thanks again for sharing your wisdom. I hope it holds!
