FCP 7 on 2.0ghz MacbookPro 15″ 2gb memory, pushing the envelope?
i just recently bought a 2.0ghz MBP and I installed FCP 7 on it. Frames are constantly dropping, I know its the fact that my macs disks are too slow for it.
I’ve done some research, what would be better, adding more memory or buying a new HDD, and if so which one? I know there i a way to fix this without purchasing a newer mac…

Both. You must use an external drive as running media, OS and program of the internal is a recipe for problems. The speed of the drive depends on codecs and frame rates you need to run. USB is not recommended so firewire 400 is minimum.
FCP can use 4 gig of RAM so unless you want to run other programs like Compressor, you only need another 2 gigs.
So a firewire external, extra RAM and not trying to run HD codecs, particularly HDV or XDCam and you should be OK. Lesser machines have been happily handling DV codec for years. FCP 7 might even perform better than FCP6 as it is Intel only and slightly less bloated.

You could probably double up your RAM quite easily and successfully.
If your hdd is 5400-speed, you’ll feel the difference with an upgrade to 7200rpm, and/or you’ll likely see better performance from using a fast external disk or raid for your media.
Of course, depending on what codecs you’re using and how many streams you’re trying to pull at once, you might just want to uncheck that ‘warn me next time’ button…
