Convert first to an editing codec like ProRes422.

Yes, the file you are trying to import and edit. Convert that to ProRes 422.

I used iSkysoft Video Converter, which will work if i want to pay $35 for the full version. Ecamm, which makes Call Recorder, suggests using Compressor. When I tried that I got “One or more jobs do not have a source media file assigned.”

Did you drop your actual Media file onto the Browser of compressor?

That worked. Thank you. Of course I now realize I have no idea how to output something on Compressor.

I was able to convert it to Apple TV. That played fine in Quicktime and VLC but when I imported it to FCP7 It was the wrong aspect ratio and the sound had Donal Duck quacking underneath the interview.

You don’t wanna convert it to Apple TV in the first place, that is a highly compressed codec, not an editing codec.
Try a ProRes codec and on the Geometry Tab of the Inspector, make sure you have your frame size and pixel ratio set right.

There are a lot of settings, including a bunch for Quicktime and a bunch for advanced format conversions.

What exact format is the source file? What is your plan with the converted file?
