  • FCP 6.0.5 failing to launch

    Hi Everyone,

I have a Mac Pro 3Ghz, with a decklink HD extreme card.
I have been editing using FCP 6.0.4 for the last few months and recently booted up my machine and was prompted for a serial number for FCP.
This was strange as I have been running this version FCP 6 for over a year…
I have not installed anything new recently, nor updated.
It accepted my serials but when i tried to start FCP is crashes on start up, doesnt launch.
I then updated to 6.0.5 the latest and still crashes the same way.
    I uninstalled using FCS Remover.
I have re-installed FCP 6.0 and that launches fine but as soon as i update (even to 6.0.4 that was stable for months) it crashes…
All my other FCS applications work, DVDSP, MOTION, SOUNDTRACK, COLOR…
    Its only FCP thats crashing.
I also updated to the latest drivers for the Decklink.

PLEASE HELP!!! I have current jobs that are all 6.0.4 project files and i cant finish them before Christmas!!

Wost case scenario how can I open 6.0.4 project files in FCP 6.0 as a quick work around to get jobs out…

    Many thanks!

Trash your preferences for FCP, then don’t launch using a project file, but just click on the FCP icon… see if it opens OK. If it does, then you likely have media file problems… they can become corrupt, often they are render files.

    Hi Jerry,

    Thanks for the reply.
    Unfortunately it has not helped.
I have re-installed the entire FCS Suite now and still no luck.
Trashed all preferences relating to FCP multiple times…
I have opened FCP in all instances by clicking on the icon in the applications folder.

I have officially now tried everything I know to try and get FCP going again… Im at a total loss for words.

    Any ideas… Anyone? Please.

    thanks.

Try creating a new user, then log on as that user and see if FCP opens. You may have something corrupt in that user profile.

    Hi Steven,

    Thanks for the input.
    Unfortunately that didnt work.
But i think i may have found the problem.
I found another thread talking about FCP not starting up and it has to do with the ethernet card being blown by lightening.
I think the same must have happened to mine over night.
Apparently FCP checks the machine ID on the ethernet card with the FCP serial number.
If it cant read the ethernet cards number then it wont launch FCP.

I have ordered an airport upgrade kit to see if that will help give the machine an ID again.
Otherwise i need to replace the whole mac pro logic board… bit pricey…

    thanks

    Dear Warwick,

i am having the same trouble and there was a lightening storm yesterday and after reading your post i am scared sh*tless.

Also I am travelling and do not have my serial number on me. I am too in desperate need of it to work because i am travelling and filming.

Please tell me you found another solution to the problem.

did you still have access to the internet when you thought your ethernet card was fried??

    Hi Paula,

Unfortunately i have not fully resolved the problem yet.
I am waiting for an Airport extreme upgrade card to install onto the logic board.

The thinking with the airport card is that the machine will use that to get the machine ID and ignore the ethernet ports. Both of mine are totally dead and the problem is the ethernet is integrated into the logic board so you cant just replace the ethernet part, i need a whole new logic board!

I cannot find any other way to get around this problem without fixing the ethernet issue. The software needs that machine ID it seems…

I did not have internet access at all after the lightening strike.
This took me a while to figure out as my modem was blown too…

Sorry this is all the info I have at this stage.
I will let you know if the airport card works.

    Cheers
    Warwick.

    Hey,

The same thing has happened to me! When I open fcp its just a black screen, the title bar is the only thing that pops up if you scroll over it. It doesn’t freeze, just goes black and I don’t know why! I’ve reinstalled, upgraded, downgraded, I even downloaded a torrent fcp just because I need to get my work done and that did the same thing! Is this what is happening to you all? If so, let me know what happens!

    Thanks,
    Joe
