FCP 6.0.4 unable to Log and Transfer .mts files
Posted by Daniel Brouw on May 8, 2009 at 1:53 pmOn the internet/forums etc I read that FCP 6.0.4 will be albe to import the movie files from the camera using File > Log and Transfer.
However, the Log and Transfer-popup window remains empty.Leopard does however recognize the camera, it shows up as a mounted folder, and I am able to browse through he folder structure, I can even download the files and play them with different apps. But I want FCP to import the files. I don’t want to download the files, convert and import into FCP.
Come on, 2100 dollar system, 700 dollar camera and 1200 software should be able right?!

May 8, 2009 at 9:18 pmsorry, I must add that I am new to video editing. With all due respect (i.e. many thanks for your answer) Doug, your reply to me is like abracadabra….
What exactly do you mean? If there are any presets I need to get right in order for it all to work, please elaborate a little.

May 9, 2009 at 5:03 amperhaps you should look at the FCP help menu. the log and transfer window does not populate without pointing it to where your files are, which is the “add custom path” drop down.
As far as what settings to use, that would depend on what you shot, my guess is you would want to convert the mts files to proRes which is set in the Log & Transfer prefs. I think all you can convert to is proRes with those files.Doug Beal

May 9, 2009 at 9:21 amThanks again so much for responding so quickly.
When I Add Custom path to the camcorder it gives me this message:
“AVCHD” contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media.”
No matter to what folder of the folder hierarchy I point FCP to…..
Might there be a problem with the folder structure? (I know a collegue of mine deleted some scenes from the camcorder directly from within the folder: AVCHDBDMVSTREAM. Has this messed up the structure, or does this not cause the problem above?)

May 9, 2009 at 2:54 pmYes that can cause a problem. You need to delete the thumbnail from the from the camera which in turn deletes the associated media and rebuilds the directory. There is a piece of software that can allegedly pull the footage in though rumor is it’s slow look here
https://www.shedworx.com/voltaichdThere is a discussion here about your issue

May 10, 2009 at 10:12 amThanks Doug for all the help.
I backed up the whole directory of the camera. Then I deleted (on the camera) all files (i.e. video and picture). After shooting new footage, FCP is able to recognize and transfer!
It was the directory structure that was messed up.

May 14, 2009 at 6:27 pmWell, I’m stumped. Having read previous posts, I’ve copied the entirety of the disk image that mounts on my desktop when I put the card in the card reader. The PRIVATE folder contains a subfolder (STREAM) full of .MTS files. When I try to specify the custom path (or whatever the wording attaching to the little dropdown menu is) I’m getting the unsupported media/invalid directory structure error message another correspondent mentions above. I’m not sure which Preferences I want.
Any assistance will be gigantically appreciated.

May 15, 2009 at 2:09 pmJohn,
Sounds like you have a damaged file/folder structure (like I had). Try making a backup of everything on your camera (or memory card), than ON THE CAMERA, delete all files (movies and images). Shoot a quick test video, hook the camera up to the computer, start FCP and Log and Transfer. Should work now, this is what did it for me.

August 19, 2009 at 4:55 pmThere might be a “bug” with the L&T window.
I found some workaround that might just work for you here: https://bit.ly/SPv7w
Good luck!

September 13, 2010 at 9:19 pmI had the same problem and found that FCP would not import from the internal memory of the camera, but it was happy about the files from the memory-card.
As a go-around I transferred my video clips from the internal drive/card to the card (as the camera is able to do) and I could then import into FCP.
I would love to be able to utilize the internal memory, but for now it works to just use cards to shoot.
