    hello
I just am about to be passed a fcp 6 project media managed copy with 2 second handles on a drive to be delivered to me. The project is hdv 50i I believe and the editor is working in fcs2 but I have fcs3 – so my question is about best workflow in this situation.

because this doc is not complete I do not want to have the editor upgrade to snowleopard or fcs3 but I just need to use color to grade his trailer and then possibly the whole film. I know they probably can’t open any if my projects but maybe I just deliver them qt’s and/or dvd’s for festivals and deliverables. I believe the producer said they need dvd’s & also will take it to a post house to be put on hdcam sr – which I imagine will also mean a frame conversion will have to be done.
    any help or advice?

    Hi Sean,
I haven’t heard of any “forward incompatibility” from FCS2 to FCS3.

    Duplicate their project.

    Open it in FCP 7.

    SEND TO COLOR.

    Color Correct.

    Send back to FCP.

Export an XML, v4, of the color corrected sequence.

    Have them Import>XML…that XML.

    thanks for the replies guys,

Shane just to clarify – they media managed only the sequence wry the trailer because I don’t want the whole film’s project and all of its content just the trailer ft now and possibly the finished film later. is this ok instead of duplicator the entire project and putting on a drive?
when I render out of color for DVD I assume it will be prores but for the DVD in that it’s 50i do I need to do any conversions?
    thanks

[Sean Kapleton] ” they media managed only the sequence wry the trailer because I don’t want the whole film’s project and all of its content just the trailer ft now and possibly the finished film later. is this ok instead of duplicator the entire project and putting on a drive?”

When I say “duplicate the project file” I mean…duplicate the project file only. Not ALL the media, just the project file. So that you have a copy of the project that opens in FCP 6, and the duplicate that you made, that upgrades to FCP 7. Don’t worry about the media at this point.

[Sean Kapleton] “when I render out of color for DVD I assume it will be prores but for the DVD in that it’s 50i do I need to do any conversions?”

You render out as ProRes, correct. At the same frame rate and frame type (interlaced, progressive) as you brought in. The conversion for DVD happens later.
