    What a stupid attitude!

[Creative Coward] “That’s one thing I won’t waste my time on.”

I personally know several of the folks that try to fix these issues and I can assure you that input to the “Provide Feedback” site is monitored. The more posts pertaining to a particular issue, the more attention it gets.

    Sincerely,
    Oliver

It’s a shame Apple missed the boat on providing us editors with the major overhaul in version 6 that I’ve been hoping for: intuitive and reliable media management.”

    Hi
    Maybe that needs Leopard?
Maybe the enhancement of Core Data is needed for FCP to progress?

[Creative Coward] “That’s one thing I won’t waste my time on.

I’ve sent quite a bit of feedback to Apple directly as well as posted on the apple.com forums. They don’t care about customer feedback, they just aren’t interested. Apple dismanteled their own forum staff (that’s customer feedback 24/7) a year ago: ” target=”_blank”>https://www.appleinsider.com/articles/06/07/31/report_confirms_dismantling_of_apple_forum_staff.html”

This comment is so far off base it’s not even funny. Apple has people on staff dedicated to reading all of the Apple based Creative Cow forums. Why? Because they get a tremendous amount of information off these forums from professionals using the gear.

Apple has people dedicated to reading the feedback that it receives.

Just because they may not respond to your feedback or you don’t see your ideas implemented, doesn’t mean they don’t care. As with everything, there are choices to be made, compromises to be made. What can Apple reasonably install into the software that a majority of the 800,000 registered users want or need? Is this a major bug or an isolated issue? How long will it take for the fix / change to be implemented and is it worth the time?

If you don’t want to send feedback to Apple, that’s fine, but don’t criticize them for not listening. I know first-hand they are listening to everything that is posted on all of these forums and on their feedback pages.

Walter and Oliver: If you say you know first-hand that Apple DOES monitor forums, I’ll take your word for it. Sure, if there’s an obvious technical bug, they have to fix it. I know they’ve done this only recently, when some users had issues with 5.1.3 and their redgiant software plug-ins: Apple reacted quickly and released 5.1.4 to fix those issues. I am aware of that.

Walter, you write that “Just because they may not respond to your feedback or you don’t see your ideas implemented, doesn’t mean they don’t care.”
Yes, that’s exactly what it means, let me explain my point:

It seems to me that Apple is eagerly catching up to Avid in terms of “technical specifications” – bullet points of what the software can do: ie support for camera or resolutions xyz, multi-cam editing, open timeline, etc. Apple has added plenty of technical features during the last years, that’s out of the question.

But: It’s still a clunky piece of software to operate. It’s missing at least a dozen VERY basic features and has annoying bugs, which make it feel like “Prosumer” software rather than professional editing software. It’s like it’s half-there and stagnated since version 4.

Why can’t I place markers and add comments during capture? Why can’t FCP output the timeline timecode to a deck? Why do I have to buy the plug in “BigTime” to get a BIG timecode window? Why does it take 3 steps before getting a dissolve in the position and duration I want? Why does placing the first audio keyframe in the timeline reduce the level by 1 dB? Why is assigning audio outputs a matter of hidden contextual menus next to the track’s name? Why is the media management not 100% reliable?

That’s what I mean by Apple doesn’t care about editors requests. Simple requests that would make editing on FCP itself easier.

Or am I missing something, Walter? From version 4 to version 6, what suggested improvements that have been discussed on Creative Cow have made it through to Apple?

It’s pointless to get into a platform war discussion. You bring up a number of valid operational points, but they are specifically from an Avid-centric POV. There are plenty of things in FCP that many editors find superior and faster than Avid, so it’s really subjective.

Avid is also no longer 100% reliable – especially in Media Mgmt. This is pretty obvious in the last few years of Adrenaline and various updates to MCSoft. Witness the recent issues with bins that disappeared in MC Soft. That won’t make you a happy camper!

All NLE companies are struggling to stay ahead and address the various formats being tossed at them from all sides, as well as to keep up with OS changes and hardware changes. It’s now a 3-way battle (Avid, Apple, Adobe), so no single NLE will have all the “best” features – assuming that’s something everyone could even agree on.

    Sincerely,
    Oliver

    Hi Oliver,

you’re right, it is pointless to go into a “platform war discussion”.

I just don’t understand why Apple doesn’t add a few features that could save time and hassle, such as being able to add markers & comments during capture. (I am off to work in a few minutes to capture 15+ hours of footage and would like do be able to do that instead of twiddling my thumbs).

They make all their iApps immensely user friendly (I love “Pages” btw), but I feel that if they paid a bit more attention to these forums, their Pro Apps could be improved as well. “Pro” doesn’t have to mean “clunky”…

    Anyway, thanks for the discussion!

I totally agree with what you’d like to see, but I think there are two issues here. FCP’s design dates to before Apple’s acquisition, so it isn’t designed around newer coding and, therefore, has old database and UI issues. To fix these requires a major rewrite. That’s probably happening, but I’m sure it gets the backburner when new priorities arise, like integrating Color. That’s the whizz-bang factor.

Face it, probably 80-90% of the users are just fine with the way it is. I think the next version of FCP (whenever that might be) is going to look a lot like Aperture, Motion or Final Cut Server. That’s the design direction Apple is following and the same UI team will do the development. Whether or not it will address the features issue is an unknown. Remember that it still must appeal to the hords of amateur users who like the product and currently only scarth the power of the product as is.

Like all popular apps, the more users it attracts, the harder it is to make wholesale changes.

    Sincerely,
    Oliver

This is the issue with duplicated sequences I’d posted before.

I gotta agree with both of you on the “platform war” no need to go there.

BUUUUTTTTT, since I am still here into Sunday morning now re-rendering 2 shows for the third time…

I gotta side a bit with CC on this even if he comes from an AVID-centric POV, there is good reason to… it is a really strong product, and, I must agree with his head scratching as to why these simple features weren’t included in 5 and definitely why they weren’t found in 6!

6 should really be called 5.5

I love FCP, Been with it since v3 – I have cut several TV shows, commercials, industrials, music videos all with their own unique delivery requirements and it is certainly impressive that FCP does what it does given its age relative to AVID.

Being QT based certainly has its advantages, I’ll take FCP over AVID any day when it comes to Import/Export! But I will take AVID over FCP any day with its robust media database architecture.

    I miss:
An elegant interface for ingesting tapes – demanding immediate action to enter a new reel name
    Custom Sift
Timeline-based “on the clip” information such as souce, durations etc.
    Timecode window
    Markers while ingesting
    Subclipiing while ingesting
    Built in TC Calc
    to name a few…

    And wonder:
Why are sub-clips really not subclips
Match Frame to master clip – don’t stop at the subclip
    Find Frame feature

AVID consolidate, decompose is beautiful! Media Mangler is not.

So if this forum is read and relied on by Apple, would it make sense to establish a Forum for Development/Wishlist? Call it Apple Final Cut Pro Wishlist where such discussions could be had?

For most projects FCP is still my choice and can’t wait to see what the latest OS & version of FCP brings…

but until then I digress back to the issue at hand – these damn missing render files…………. did someone borrow them? I demand they return them now or else 🙂 I write this as I once again am rendering, my timelines….

Right now I have nothing nice to say about FCP 6.0 or 6.01 ! IT CONTINUES TO LOSE MY F@$%!$%^^ RENDER FILES!

I have now rendered 2 TV shows about 3 times each!
I suggest exporting video only QT’s until the issue is resolved.

Its a real pisser and a time waster – its not like you can charge clients for this time, and you cant charge Apple for the hours… so I guess I’ll stick to a long response on Creative Cow tonight, once again proving to myself I need a social life… 🙂

    Cheers!
