So, we have 6 systems all running version 5. We order a new system and they give us the UNIVERSAL final cut pro. Fine…Except now any project opened, saved or created with the new UNIVERSAL version, is not backward compatible. It’s a asst station so it ruins the who project passing. We tried loading 5 with the new serial and no go. Won’t work.

So, we’re on a network, the only solution is load 5 and borrow someone elses FCP 5 code or keep unplugging the network all day.

At least let us choose at this point which version to install ..don’t “make us” in the middle of a job.

So for all the great things you do Apple, Thanks.
    For this one…damn you.

Users of Boris Red will love to know that you can’t use Red as a filter with the Universal version, it turns your clip solid black. For those of us who traided our disks in, we’re sunk. Sure would like my 5.0 disks back.

It was my understanding that the trade in discs come with both PPC versions and Intel versions on them. If you are using a PPC version it really shouldn’t matter if you upgraded the discs or not. Not flaming you, just trying to understand the upgrade process.

It’s just one Universal version which installs onto either machine. Regardless, it’s version 5.1 which is not backwards compatible with 5.0 or any derivative thereof.

Thanks for the clarification Walter. Stop the postman, I just sent them out for trade up “-)

I should have sent them in last week, as my Macbook pro is now up and running (with XP bootcamp as well). Would have been able to install the universal and tried out the laptop version, but will have to wait a few more days for the discs to return.

I got mine two days ago and installed it onto my mini (power PC). I don’t have an intel machine yet, but wanted to go ahead and get them here and install it on a secondary machine to test it.

There’s an advantage to running 5.1 system wide. It’s faster… even on PPC machines, tests are showing faster renders…

Hey, it’s 50 bucks per station, right? I’d suggest you simply upgrade all your licenses…
