FCP 5.1 – Canon XLH1 – Snow Leopard woes -HELP!
For some time now I have had FCP 5.1 (it’s a legal Academic copy, I qualified then, wouldn’t now) and a Canon XLH1, but I didn’t get to do much. I did shoot some things on both HD and SD with the Canon and always had troubles with HD transfers (like a 20 minute clip would kick out after 45 seconds) but did get things through, admittedly not entirel understanding what I was doing.
Then, coincidentally while starting to earn a living with the camera, I upgraded to Snow Leopard. Now I have a project I MUST finish and a bunch of old projects I want to finish. I was having no problem transferring SD stuff whether 16:9, 4:3 or even some stuff shot on a Panasonic DVX100a. But, after I upgraded to OS 10.6 FCP absolutely would not recognize the XLH1 if I had a tape recorded in HDV (60i) inserted…I made sure video capture settings all agreed, researched that I should choose HDV Firewire Basic, to no avail, so tried generic capture device or even SD settings (the XLH1 is supposed to be able to play HDV in SD), it not only wouldn’t let me control the Camera form FCP but Capture Now would just give me an error message.
So I tried Repair Permissions, hard drive check, multiple reboots (computer, camera etc.). Finally thought that even though FCP5 is supposed to work with XLH1, FCP6 (Studio 2) might be the answer. I can NOT afford new FCS (maybe once I get this project done LOL) and an upgrade is not possible from Academic. I happen to have a not entirely legitimate copy of FCS2 (with serial numbers) which I know works because I installed it back in the OSX 10.4 days then had remorse (I consider myself an artist and respect IP), but right now I just need to get my HDV material onto the computer. So I uninstalled FCS Academic using “FCS Remover”, emptied trash, rebooted and then and tried to install FCS2, put my FCS2 disc in. I click on “installer icon”, it asks whether I want to install for all users (but grays out other options), I click continue and it either 1) asks for my system password, I enter it and then it takes me to the Systems Preferences Pane and stops, or 2) takes me straight to the Systems Preferences Pane and stops. So I tried to reload my FCP 5.1 instead (these are original Apple Discs) and the same thing happens. To test I tried installing other software and that works fine. Rebooted, reloaded discs, etc. no joy.
So now I am stuck with FCS totally gone from my computer and a bunch of great HDV footage that I couldn’t get into the system anyway. That’s why I say HELP! I don’t really care about using the upgraded FCS, I just want to be able to edit the footage I shot in HDV on the XLH1 in FCP. Any suggestions?
For those who care, I am running an iMac 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 3 GB of Ram and Mac OS X 10.6.1.
Thanks in advance…my dog wants to be able to eat.
