FCP 5.1 and DA-88 Tracks…
I am preparing for our first HDCAM post, and I need to figure out workflow to incorporate DA-88 Audio tracks that were also recorded on location. The HDCAM masters have the four audio tracks, First two are a Live mix, Last two tracks are performers Iso’s. The DA-88 tracks are the individual tracks, with timecode matching the HDCAM masters
The specs for the Suite are G5 Dual 2.7, Decklink HD Pro, XRAID (fully Populated)
I am not a Audio Post guy, but was wondering:
– if I got a DA-88 deck , what would i need to capture the audio?
– Could i use Soundtrack pro to do the final mix?
– If no to the above, Could I get a Audio post house to take the tapes, and give me back the stems with the timcode track. and if so how would I sync?Any help would really be appreicated

Get one with RS-422 control. Can’t remember model numbers, but they are common. Not sure if you have AES inputs on that Decklink card, but I assume you do. Just capture as you would anything else.If you want to link these tracks to the HDCAM tapes while you edit search for MERGED CLIPS in your FCP help for more info. I actually find it less clunky to edit with the mix, then match up the other tracks after picture is locked. If the timecode matches, its easy.

Sure. Pro Tools would still be my tool of choice, but it would work. -
Using a DA-88 or DA-98 you can control the machine via 9 pin. Make sure that the machines have the interface card for 9 pin & VSync. However, the Decklink card can only capture 2 x AES stereo channels, so it would mean two passes to capture eight tracks off the DA-88.
Better workflow is to talk to an audio post person, have them conform the DA-88 audio to your final cut (via EDl or XML)and produce a final mix. As you have already said you are not an “audio post guy”, I wouldn’t try to do a final mix using Soundtrack Pro.
