Whilst the car anology is old and dumb, have you bought a car recently? There are always faults with new cars.. do they stop you driving? not usually. There are always faults with new operating systems.. do they stop you using the computer? not usually. But from there on the anology breaks down. The engineering parts of a car are deterministic, they have a a correct and absolute solution. Operating system software is probably the most complex commercial mass products sold and cannot be ‘solved’ in the same way. The number of different combinations in which the customer can use and abuse the product are, for all intents and purposes, infinite. There can only ever be degrees of useability and the development process involves iterations that move towards a perfect, but unreachable, solution. With software the customer is ALWAYS part of the testing process and if you believe that the point one release of a new operating system should work perfecly you are a complete idiot. The difference between software and cars is: OSX 10.4.1 will be out in a couple of weeks and will solve most people’s complaints; try taking your Mercedes to the dealer and see how long it takes to get it fixed.

Tired but true. GM and Ford have done it your way. And they are now paying the price for that. And so is Microsoft for their poor track record on securing their OS. And Apple will too it they release a buggy version of FCP 5 – at a minimum they will not continue to get my business.
I have said my say and will let you have the last word if you so choose. I am not going down the road of name calling and insults. You may get away with that in your company and with your staff if they are willing to put up with it but not with me.

[FX Bear] “I’m staying at 10.3.8 until I know Tiger is safe and stable enough to install. Is it me or has Apple’s “latest and greatest” OS seem more like Windows?”

It appears that people’s results are pretty inconsistant. The vast majority of folks have had few issues and those that have had problems, don’t all seem to have the same issues impact their machines in the same way. I’ve upgraded a PB from 10.3.8 to 10.4 and so far only Avid Xpress Pro and AOL software has shown issues. I don’t have any of the Safari or Spotlight problems others indicate. So it really depends on the exact combination on your particular machine.

From what I’ve seen so far, this is one of the smoother OS changes in either Mac OS or Windows, so I would have to say that Apple has done an excellent job. BTW, there is already an update for Pro Apps, which I’m sure is a patch for 10.3.9 and 10.4 issues. I would presume that a 10.4.1 update will be out to fix things that have cropped up in the real world installations folks are experiencing. By and large Tiger is safe, but your mileage may vary!

    Sincerely,
    Oliver

I guess we’ll all know sometime this week how stable FCP 5 will be.
