FCP 5 w/Extreme Edit To Tape???
I’m trying to Edit To Tape for the first time and not having much luck. I keep getting the following error message:
Incompatible Compression Settings.
You may have attempted to output a clip with
compression settings that do not match the current
output settings. Try nesting the clip in a sequence with
the correct settings.Here’s where I’m at… I setup the Project using Easy Setup as BM NTSC JPEG and I captured and edited everything just fine. Playback through the Extreme card was automatically set to BM NTSC 8-Bit and all is fine there, everything on the timeline displays very well on my NTSC monitor via the BM component output, and the component signal is then routed from the monitor to my UVW-1800. BTW, I also tried nesting the sequence in new sequence with the correct settings as suggested by the error message, and I rendered the whole thing too, but no dice…
So, what’s the problem? Is there something I’m missing? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Coincidentally, I encountered the same error message – just earlier today. Unlike you, I was working in BM 10-bit uncompressed NTSC. As a temporary workaround, I exported a Quicktime reference movie,k dropped it into Blackmagic Deck Control, and put it to tape from there,
But I really wish FCP’s Edit to tape worked – I really need to do a few precise inserts within the completed output…

So, your thought is that it doesn’t actually work as its supposed to? Or, do you think we’re both missing something?

Yes and possibly yes. I find it extremely odd, but I’ve been on FCP 4.5 until very recently so I can’t say for sure. Another oddity is that yesterday I couldn’t drag and drop any kind of FCP sequence or clip into the Edit to Tape window. But as I say, I’m just getting up on FCP5. Others on this board are likely to be far more capable with this question that I.

Hi David,
When getting the error message, what do you have in your Viewer window?
Have you tried dragging the Sequence from the Browser window onto the “Insert” / “Assemble” icon in the Edit To Tape window?

The solution to your problem is contained in the support note Incompatible compression settings error message in Final Cut Pro during Edit to Tape.

BINGO!!! Thanks Kristian, I was going completely bonkers trying to get this to work… For some unknown reason I could not find it in the manual though I searched long and hard.

You’re most welcome and I’m glad this has got you going. That particular error message kept appearing in this forum some while ago so I asked Apple about it and they were very helpful in supplying information. We created the support note as it is a tricky problem to solve but easy once you know how. Thanks for your kind words 🙂
