    to fcp 5
anybody know if avid xpress pro can handle 16mm film (telecine anton timecode ) down to dvcam then being sent off hd to DI

i know fcp will handle this but i need some tips for those who are using both here.
i need to get this person to fcp for this .

what can i argue so to speak ( i know they argue media manager and reconnecting clips and realtime with avid but thats on the big systems)

Why would anyone want to edit with the handcuffed avid?

The first time I used MC express back in the day, I could not get over why editing feautures were randomly “swithced off”.

Is this true of this express too?

That would be reason enough for me.

    David

    Peace and Love 🙂

I think that Avid can handle this workflow, if you finish on a higher end avid. The Xpress Pro (due to pressure from FCP) is not as handicapped as its predecessors.

There’s a whitepaper PDF you can download from this page called Avid Xpress Pro for the Independent Filmmaker.

    https://www.avid.com/resources/whitepapers/index.asp?marketID=1

I’ve only used FCP for film or Avid Film Composer. My friend has done a few features using the Xpress Pro, but he’s not as well versed with FCP so that explains his preference.

Also, if you need to finish on a high end Avid, I think the Xpress Pro has an advantage when moving the project.

Of course there are the add ons, maybe you need the Mojo, maybe you need the Mojo SDI, maybe you need to rent another system for finishing…..

Media management, reconnecting and film editing is exactly the same for XPro and Media Composer. Biggest differences are there are more resolution option in MC and I/O connections. But all the necessary tools to edit a feature is there in XPro. You can even capture 24p with Standard Pulldown via firewire (no NLE does this). So that ‘only on big systems’ argument is not really legit regarding your needs.

Workflow wise, all what you need to track proper key/edgecode, TC, pulldown, audio TC, sync’ing, etc are all within the application. No need to go out (a la Cinema Tools).

I am cutting a short right now shot on 35mm/4 perf. Offline on DVCAM. We will then use Cut List to make a new selects transfer to HDCAM SR. CC on DaVinci or Pogle. Finish on HDCAM SR.

Of course if you are not familiar with the GUI, all the advantages goes out the window.

If you are familiar with FCP and now how to operate Cinema Tools properly, why switch if you are not familiar with your alternative?
