    Hello All,

I am currently using V. 5 of FCP studio on a G5 at work, I want to purchase am iMac w/ FCP software for home use and be able to bring a firewire drive to and from each computer to work on the same projects on both computers. As you all know the iMacs are intel now, so my question is – will i be able to seamlessly work on the same projects on both computers when one has the Power PC version of FCP 5 and the other has the universal version of FCP 5? Will i be able to create a project on the Power PC version of FCP v. 5 and open it later with the universal version withoput going through a “conversion process”?

    Any help would be appriciated

    Thanks,

    -Marcus

    no.
You have to go through a conversion process in order to work on your projects in 5.1.

FCP 5.1 projects (PowerPC or Intel) are NOT backwards compatible with FCP 5.0 or 5.0.4.

so what he’d want to do, is get the universal version, install it on both computers, and work from there?

p.s. yes, i know that you need to have a version per computer…what if he installs it on a bootable hard drive that can move around?!?

Having a copy per machine means having a license per machine, doesn’t it. If you have 5 legal copies of FCP going on 5 machines you can get a “crossgrade” for one set of your install discs, and use those to update each of your machines, right? You still have five FCP licenses, and it’s an minor update (not a point I’m trying to start an argument over), not a new version so I would think your v5 license should support v5.1. How else would they handle the update for large customers who buy many licenses, but only one or two sets of install discs? Basically, couldn’t he buy himself a copy of FCS for home, and install it with his own license, but also use those install discs to update his machine at work since the update doesn’t change any license information?

Well, technically you can do what you say because Apple does not assign new serial numbers, you just use the same ones you had all along. However, I’m sure Apple would prefer that you send all 5 copies back to them. I honestly hae not read the licensing agreement that came with my crossgrades, but I did send back both of our copies of FCP 5 and received two copies of FCP 5.1 universal.
