  • FCP 5 audio glitching…..Ive tried amny things to fix

Posted by George Mandl on November 12, 2005 at 6:07 pm

    I’m running on a G5 with 2.5GB ram and 2.5 Ghz processing. FCP 5.

I’m working in a DV NTSC Anamorphic Sequence, 48Khz. Everything was captured this way.

There is one part of the sequence that has me completely baffled. I have a music track, which is the only audio track with anything on it. The video above has no sound associated with the clip. When I play the video only, there is no sound. When I play the audio, but turn off the video track, the sound is perfect. When both the audio and video tracks are on, there is a glitching sound (similar to when tape is recorded on a dirty head, or something like that).

    I’ve tried the following:
-Audio playback setting to high, low, medium
-moving the music clip to other audio tracks
-moving the music clip to other parts of the same track (just to see if it would glitch, and it did not, so I know the sound clip is ok)
-exporting the video and reimporting it
-placing the video on another track
-copying and pasting the entire sequence of clips to a new sequence

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    George

There is a function in FCP that is often overlooked… and it can help with many audio and video “skipping”, “sticking” and “missing” problems.

You should “Mixdown” the Audio for playback before you dub out of FCP, or during the edit, if you have audio/video stuttering, drop-outs or freezes.

NOTE: Mixdown has even been demonstrated to help with slipping, skipping problems (or “missing” audio clips) for files being EXPORTED as QT (or similar) files out of FCP.

First, SELECT ALL of your audio tracks (highlight them) on the timeline, then:

Sequence Menu > Render Only > Mixdown.

You should see a dialog box telling you its rendering.

It might seem to make little sense that “Mixing down” even simple audio tracks will “fix” complex video “freezes” or random audio dropouts to tape or export, but it CAN.

NOTE: It does not matter of you only have one audio track, if there are random freezes during output, you should try the Mixdown.

    Also:
If this problem persists, try making the VIDEO clip OFF-LINE (trash it) that is positioned “over” this audio problem, and then re-capturing that video clip to see if that helps.

Thanks for your help. As it turned out, the tape footage was not so good. Dirty heads or something. I recaptured, and the audio went away, but the video had a slight glitch to it, so I’ve concluded that this was the problem.

Anyways, Thanks again. It took me a while to get back to this issue, so sorry for the delayed response.
