FCP 24fps to UK DVD playable… Save My Head From Exploding
I have a two minute teaser in FCP 7 23.98fps
Trying to burn to DVD to play in UK DVD players
I have Toast 7
I have Compressor 3.5.3
on a Macbook Pro OS 10.6.7 with Matshita Superdrive
I have DVD+R DVD’s which I get an error early on in the burn in Toast and Disc Utility
I have DVD-R DVD’s which hang up on ‘processing’ in ToastI have managed to get Toast to burn a disc image and then burn the disc with Disc Utility. If I convert to PAL (within Toast) the DVD only plays the audio with no video. If I don’t convert to PAL (within Toast) the disc can’t be read on this player.
I know this is an annoying question but I’m desperate. These needed to go out days ago and I’ve been up all night with an editor wrangling my computer from afar.

1st question:
do you really need to convert to PAL?
most DVD players and TVs in PAL territories will play back NTSC, and have been able to do so for years.2nd question.
why use Toast for format conversion?
that’s what Compressor is forthe simplest, and probably best looking way to do this is to make a copy of your teaser,
open it in Cinema Tools, and CONFORM it to 25fps
then take that file, and make your DVD components in Compressor,
and create a DVD in DVDSP. (or Toast)conforming gives the best motion as it’s a frame-for frame conversion.
possible problem is the clip will play a bit fastanother option is to take you teaser, run it though compressor to do a standards conversion,
then put that back in compressor to make your DVD components, then make a DVD.i suggest the two step process, as suspect trying to standards convert while making your mpeg files is asking for trouble.

i took so long to reply that Dave beat me to it!i’ll add that Graeme Nattress makes a highly reccomended plug in for doing the standards conversions in FCP.

As Nick said, PAL DVD players can play NTSC DVDs.
The Hollywood movies DVDs distributed in Europe are NTSC.
No need to make any conversion.

that’s not quite true,
Most Hollywood movies DVDs distributed in PAL territories are PAL
i base this on living in Australia, and buying a lot of DVDs locally and from the UK, and some from France & Germany.
plus there is the issue of region codinghowever, it is not uncommon to see NTSC versions for sale in all these territories
the PAL versions are, almost universally, made by playing the source material at 25fps

Rafael is right, NTSC plays fine here in Europe on PAL equipment, just don’t enable a Region Code.
Some clients want PAL and NTSC DVDs, no idea why, makes no difference but you get to charge a bit more.Neal
