FCP 2 and SONY HVRDR60 (or .M2T file)
Hi Guys,
I’m working with Final Cut Studio 2 and I also have a SONY HVRDR60 Hard Disk recorder. Basically, the sony HDR records the files as .M2T file format and the FCP does not recognize it. I have used the MPEG Streamclip by http://www.squared5.com but it doesnt look like there’s an easy workaround for the encoding.
You need to go into each folder and click on the M2t file to bring it into the encoding file. This is a HUGE waste of time!
I have been on the Phone with Sony and have looked all over the net for a workaround, and it doesnt seem like there is one yet.
The FCS 2 documentation states that it supports the SONY hard disk recorder but when I have tried importing though the “Log and Tranfer” window in FCP and it doesnt work. I get the “invalid directory structure” file.
Does anyone have an answer for this workflow? It’s almost better to just use tape!

You need the Blackmagic Intensity card. HDV is not a fun codec to edit with.

Hi Steve,
You gave me a very good idea – capture from the HVRDR60 as a deck – but I captured it though firewire no problem.
I deselected ‘Create New Clip Start/Stop’ but that didn’t seem to matter – it still created the clips. I’m not too happy about that, but this is a much better workflow than taking the .M2t files and transcoding them into Quicktime. Now, I am just capturing live.
Dont buy into the Apple .pdf that it’s the same workflow as the P2 camera – that’s a bunch of rubbish! Just put the HVRDR60 into ‘VIDEO’ Mode.

Hey I’m with you guys on this one. Trying to “log and Transfer” files from the HVRD60, and keep getting the invalid file structure.
I’m awaiting a call from Apple, will post if any news.

It works. I captured HDV footage directly to the HVRDR60 from a HVR-V1U into Final Cut 6 (Studio 2). I used log and capture with the HVRDR60 set to video mode. I just did a “capture now” as a test. The next step is to test batch capture.
I hope this is not a super stupid question but when I set the HVR-V1U to 24p (or 30p for that matter) the footage is saved as 1080i. It’s interlaced. So what the big deal with the 24p if it’s converted to 1080i? Am I missing something? Does it have to do with the fact that I saving to the HVRDR60? Any suggested reading would be helpful.

Hi There –
I spoke to Apple and M2T is not supported in FCP – As advised by Apple, Sony will need to write a program that will extract the M2T files and then import them.
I’ve tried using http://www.squared5.com software, and that was just a headache – though it worked, it took forever. My advice is just to log and capture by setting the hard disk to video… that should sort you for the timebeing.
