I am editing on a laptop, with external hard drive. I need it because I only have 80 giga and the project is large. Everytime I try to edit, FCE kicks me out. I am getting really annoyed as I think that the separate hard drive is the culprit, and the fact that I captured the project in its entirety, 3 times 13 gigas. What is the general experience here ? Do I have to split the clips in 10 minutes (like with my pc) or is the external hard drive never going to do the job right in any case ? Do I have to keep it all on the main hard drive?
    Thank you for your suggestions!

    Try delete your preferences.

In your home folder go to library/preferences/Final Cut Express User Data/ and delete the prefs file and the cache file. (or just move them to the desktop if you don’t want to delete them right away.)

    Did this fix it?

    Laura,

As a general rule I do the following.

10 minute chunks MAX. Think about a drive seeking from minute 1 to minute fourty back to minute 5 on to minute 32 back to minute 17 on one file. You can see how it could be taxing.

ALWAYS have media on external drives.

If your drive has two FW 400 or 800 ports, try swapping them as sometimes one port is slightly faster depending on the internal wiring od teh BUS.

    David

    Peace and Love 🙂
