Hello, all. I’m completely new to FCE, but I’ve played around with iMovie enough to know I want more. I have several clips that I have gone to the trouble of exporting as QT files to import into FCE, but now the files will only playback correctly in the Viewer if I start them from the beginning. If I try to play them from any point in the clip, it plays for roughly 2 seconds, then the audio freezes, followed by the sound dropping out a few seconds later.

I am trying to do all of this on a PowerBook G4 1.33GHz, 1GB RAM, files on a 250GB Maxtor external FireWire drive. The clips are all roughly 1GB in size. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

WHAT CODEC ARE QT MOVIES IN? WITH THE LAPTOP ABOUT THE ONLY CODEC YOU’LL BE EDITING WITH IS DV. IT SOUNDS LIKE THEY COULD BE UNCOMPRESSED VIDEO WHICH TAKES A LOT OF HORSE POWER TO PLAY. IF IT NEEDS TO RENDER WHEN YOU DRAG IT INTO THE TIMELINE THEN RENDER IT AND SEE IF IT PLAYS. MY BET IS THAT YOUR QTS NEED TO BE IN A DIFFERENT CODEC OR YOU’LL JUST NEED TO RENDER THEM IN THE TIMELINE.

That worked great! Thanks. BTW, will I always have to do this with my DV files, or does FCE handle that when video is imported from the camera?

Just use an DV/NTSC easy setup and the timeline and importing is set up for you. You should not need to render the video unless you add an effect or transition or have many audio tracks. If the footage doesn’t match the timeline you’ll always be rendering. When importing audio I always convert it to 48 khz 16 bit first and then I don’t have to render the audio as much.

    Hope this helps-
